Well, that was a shattering journey....
Trying to lug 30 kg of radio antennas and associated gear across 2 continents (for this is what I've technically just done), is no fun! To cap it all, the twattish loading people at Istanbul Airport obviously threw my storage case into the truck/plane, because it was heavily damaged. Luckily, the $$$ equipment was with me in my backpack, so no great harm done.
So where did I end up? I finally arrived early this Friday afternoon in ...... Mauritius! (Well done Baldrick for guessing this destination early on in this thread).
Why Mauritius? It is a combination of some good points in favour of Mauritius (for my own personal circumstances), and also some negative points against some other locations.
I need a warm/hot location all year round for the sake of my lung health (already in the warm climate in Mauritius, I have stopped coughing and there is no 'feeling' deep in my lungs of impending pneumonia. Yeehaa!)
Other countries also have warm/hot/humid climates, but fall down in my assessment because they are either too 'scummy' (a catch-all word for the likes of Cambodia, Bangladesh etc), or in the case of Thailand, too much hassle to enter right now, too demanding for visa financials and too much flip-flopping.
I have avoided majority-Muslim countries like Malaysia, Bangladesh etc. Too must negative histoty there, and potential violence towards non-Muslims - Bangladesh for esample.
Mauritius swung it on their retirement via and remote worker visa >> no financial deposit lumpsum needed (Thailand needs 800,000 THB, Sri Lanka needs $15,000 USD).
These visa types in Mauritius only need $1,500 brought into the country each month (no requirement to spend that money), for 3 years. Then you can apply for a 20-year PR visa, with ZERO financial requirements. You could live in Mauritius on a UK state pension (Mauritius is on their index-linked list of countries also).
Finally, Mauritius is 45 minutes away from the island of Reunion, which is in the EU, (so index-linked state pension). It's more expensive than Mautitius because it uses the Euro, but since I will have my Irish passport later this year, I have automatic right of entry/work etc - a plan B if needed.
I've been down to the local beach today, looks like Nai Yang Beach with frogs... (I mean nice French people!). Since Creole seems to be the main language spoken by the locals, I'm fine speaking French or English, and it's not difficult to understand the Creole.
I've rented a car and will visit some properties to rent long-term. The supermarket prices seem ok also.
To be updated with photos!
Update: Just as I posted this, I got the results of the Covid ram-a-pointy-thing-up-your-nose test on entry at the airport today. Negative, so no guys in hazmat suits chasing me....
Groping women when you're old is fine - everyone thinks you're senile
How's the internet speeds...that's was the only drawback I saw to working there.
Good luck Simon. Looking forward to the pics.
Glad your lungs are already feeling better!
Actually, they have just introduced a 1Gbps/60Mbps down/upload connection for about $78 USD a month! I need a reliable 5 Mbps minimum upload for Zoom, 10 Mbps is better. The telecom company say that they can run fibre to any property on the island. So once I rent a property long-term, (hopefully next week), then I can sort out the fibre connection....
Glad you landed safely. All the best as it plays out.
^ditto. Glad you arrived safely, Simon.
Congrats to Baldrick for guessing it right early on! My first guess was Sri Lanka, but after Simon negated that choice, it was Mauritius or Reunion.
Looking forward to stories & pics about Mauritius.
Is it just me or does anyone else conjure images of Simon on a beach sat around a fire with wild hair and tattered clothes and Cindy's head on a rock with him talking to it?
You had that vision too!
Good luck Simon and I'm lucking forward to the updates!!
Best of luck Simon. It will be interesting to hear about the expat community there- will they conveniently not speak English when an anglophone is around?
Mautitius? Way cool. Good luck Simon. Glad to hear the lungs are settling down.
You and Mandaloopy have an interesting outlook on life.
Mauritius?
Port Louis is one of , if not, the most affluent city in Africa. So maybe the most expensive.

Congratulations on getting there, Simon. I hope things work out well for you. Please do let us know how everything works out. Very interested to hear about prices and see pictures.
I would be interested to hear about the dollys in Mauritius .and the general tampering scene? If any.? This request is purely out of curiosity coz I'm married now. Years ago I had an opportunity to work there once but gave it a swerve in favour of a more relaxed location. I'm wondering did I fuck up?. Ive met a few Mauritian dollies here in oz while taking ubers. And they all seem to have nice eyes and a lovely disposition .but invariably quite a big DIFF. A huge ass. Which is quite common in Africa.

I think Baldrick spent a bit of time there to. Oi. Baldrick can you give ( my Friend) the skinny on the womanising and swirling frostys scene?
These are the pertinent questions. Never mind internet speed etc. Let's get to the nitty gritty. For example can a good shrimp gumbo be had?
A quick squiz online reveals housing looks ok, and compared to the insane rental prices in much of the western world, a bargain.
