Who cares? An actress is an actress.
@Simon43 - sorry to hear about that. I've seen some vlogs from VN that they're cracking down on foreigners too (those on tourist visas, many of whom were TEFLing). Philippines is still closed to tourists, as is most of SE Asia. Malaysia & SG have travel bubbles & allow certain countries in.
There's a business visa for Bali (Indonesia) which allows 6 months, but it's suspended (I think).
Turkey allows 6 months, as well as Mexico and some other countries. I think Albania allows 1 year (not sure). From some vlogs, I've seen that other Balkan countries are open, but I don't know the length of allowed stay for tourists.
You could always set up another hotel in TH.
Good luck in your future plans.
Hi Katie, no more hotel-building for me! As for Turkey, it is open for UK citizens to enter without quarantine if they have been vaxed, and once in the country, it's easy to get a long-stay visa. Plus when I retire, my UK pension will be index-linked (as in the Philippines, but not in Laos, Thailand etc).
My original plan for living in Laos was to stay here until I retire, and then to move to a warm location with a beach etc. I'm about 3 years away from that time... I really want to avoid being 'fcuked about' by immigration/police etc in my old age Oh, ham radio is all OK in Turkey - many radio amateurs live there
Groping women when you're old is fine - everyone thinks you're senile
@Simon - in case you're interested in PH, there's a retirement visa called SRRV (Special Resident Retirees Visa). You'd need a bank deposit for that - 10k usd if w/ pension, 20k usd if w/o. The PRA (Phil Retirement Authority) conducts online (zoom) orientations.
I wouldn't advise staying in PH for long term on a tourist visa (though you could enter on it once PH reopens, probably next year). PH is cracking down on tourist visas too, and there's a new immigration law on the works (it's for review in Senate) which may change current rules.
I don't know about the ham radio situation in PH though. But as I know, the SRRV is cheaper than Malaysia's MM2H program (which recently increased the $$ requirement).
PH has many beaches. However there are cons too, like power cuts & lack of supplies, internet issues, especially if you're staying in the islands. Check out Topper's Bacolod thread.
The govt officials in PH are also a bit tough (especially on covid rules), which some foreigners don't like. So maybe you can choose places in Central/ South America, Turkey or the Balkans, which seem less restrictive. Good luck on Turkey. Maybe you should be a vlogger/ Youtuber.
Cheers and safe travels.
Simon, I'm sorry to hear they are shifting the goalposts. Although I am in Thailand it was always my plan to use my MM2H via to retire to Malaysia, now they are planning to make that unaffordable without giving grandfather rights to existing visa holders. So maybe I'll stay in Thailand until they too change the rules. Perhaps they'll make medical insurance a requirement for those on a retirement visa and that would see costs rise considerably once I reach my 70s. We are all guests at the whims of unpredictable governments. Maybe I'll follow your lead and take a look at Turkey.
If I were wealthier then I'd look at Portugal. They have the Atlantic coast and some fine inland scenery, with great food and wine and a generous citizenship scheme.
To be honest, I think the whole concept of retiring abroad in sunny countries is getting harder, unless you have lots of $$$. As you say, Malaysia is tightening up the visa rules, so is Cambodia, Laos, Thailand etc.
At first glance, Turkey looks possible as a Brit, also Bulgaria. I want somewhere warm with some sea. Some slutty women would also be appreciated, but maybe I'll have to settle for a firm-buttocked ewe in Turkey...
@simon - I see many "top 10 places to retire" vids on YT. Many of those mentioned are SE Asian, Latin American or Eastern European countries. The problem that I see with most of these vids is they only consider cost of living, not the visa issues. I think it's harder nowadays to retire somewhere which isn't your own passport's country, unless you have a spousal/ retirement/ residency visa or a 2nd/3rd passport.
As many have mentioned, many countries are moving their goal posts. In PH, a tourist can stay for 3 years, just constantly renewing tourist visas and doing a visa run somewhere to reset the clock. With covid and the country still closed to tourists, many expats had to leave and some have their 3-year clocks ticking fast.
As I've said in a previous post, the Philippines has a new immigration law being reviewed. According to the news, it's one of the priority bills and it's being fast tracked. So my guess is that the present govt wants to have it approved before the end of Pres Du30's term. The election is in May next year.
Yes, lots more foreigners in TH compared to PH. During my 1st time in BKK, I was surprised at the sheer number of Western tourists, old & young. PH isn't much on the trail of the Western backpackers, unlike TH and its neighbouring countries.
Re: older expats, lots of them in Angeles & Subic. Boracay is more of a tourist/ vacation place (not much for expats), because the cost of living is higher there. I also saw some western expats in Puerto Galera.
Other expat destinations in PH are Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete & Davao (to a lesser extent). Davao City is the stronghold of the Dutertes.
