On my last day in Luang Prabang I took a photo of the erosion protection work on the Nam Kham river, a few hundred meters before it joins the Mekong river.

This project is essentially (IMHO) a 'con'. The fact is that this section of the river doesn't suffer from erosion (simple science tells us that a slow-moving river has little energy and this is especially the case when it's not flowing around a corner). In fact, the UN has donated millions of $ to Laos to minimise soil erosion and this is 1 way to spend it that benefits 'certain' people.

You see, after turning the sides of the river into a bland, concrete strip, this means that the local houses that used to border the river no longer do so! Instead, there is a strong new strip of land that can then be used by 'certain' people for various commercial enterprises. This is what happened a few years ago when a similar strip was built on a bend of the river. The strip was built, the local houses lost their village frontage and now it's some sort of tourist market.

Ho hum, I suppose it's called progress....
