Took another image of the sun with that huge sunspot currently threatening us with a CME. It is about 8 times wider that the diameter of Earth, but still only 25% of the size of the Carrington Event spot.

Now, wouldn't that be a bit difficult? I used a hand held solar filter on the lens of my Nikon A1000 camera, and it is stopped down about 3 stops.

It's the little brown ones you have to watch. I hooked this one out from the bottom of the pool yesterday. You have to be careful because one time I put a drowned scorpion on a table to study, but when it dried out it came back to life. I'm a bit more wary now.

I was told in Israel that the black ones will put you in the hospital, the yellow ones will put you in the ground.

Your story is like the Japanese chef that was preparing a meal of snake, chopped off it's head and got to work, went back to the table 20 minutes later and the head bounced up, bit him and killed him.

I have idea of the veracity of that, but used it to scare the bejaysus out of the kid when she was young.

You've reminded me of something that happened a long time ago in Primary School. Before school one morning I'd checked my night line in the stream in the fields out back, and there was a big eel on the end, about a pound or so from memory.

As you did in those days, after I'd decapitated the eel I took both pieces into school in a bowl of water to show the class. I still remember that one girl was poking the head when it bit her, latched on to her finger and wouldn't let go. I was told not to take any more eels into school after that.

We had eel fishcakes for dinner that night, by the way.

There was a story from the US not too long ago, a chap used a spade to decapitate a rattlesnake. Then he bent down to pick it up and the head bit him.

...as noted, no lunch is necessary...and we walk many kilometers in the city visiting favorite locations...Uber is used for any destination over 3 kilometers, however...

SF, like a number of US cities has real homelessness and rife drug problems - Fentanyl and Tents - been quite a few stories in the UK papers on this and it being a derivative of liberal drug policies - looks bad.

...saw a city in distress when we were there...Market street, a main shopping venue, was nearly destroyed by lack of foot traffic during Covid: all the major stores (Nordstrom, Bloomindale's, even Old Navy) have gone...shops are fighting back against homeless defecating on commercial streets by power washing daily, but...unless more effective changes are made, it's slowly becoming derelict...sad to relate...on the bright side, the museums, Golden Gate park (and the DeYoung) and the pier restaurants and resident sea lions are all in good shape...so, there's hope for a recovery...one local fascist suggested distributing free fentanyl and body removal service to the homeless...the Chinese consulate might be approached for pharmaceutical assistance...

I had to make an overnight trip from Luang Prabang to Nong Khai (visa run) to activate my annual retirement visa in Laos.

There are no early morning flights to Vientiane from LP, so I got up at a reasonable hour and rode my ZingZang motorbike the 20km or so to LP, then left it at a friendly guesthouse for the night (I don't trust leaving this valuable steed in the airport car park overnight).

Then onto the Lao Airlines prop plane for the 45 minute flight to Vientiane.

Once I arrived in Vientiane, I took a taxi to Nong Khai Friendship bridge, checked out of Laos, over the bridge and through the Thai immigration, (who welcomed me with a cheery "red pen no good - do it again" after I completed my arrival card using the only pen in my bag).

I stayed the night at Mut Mee guesthouse. This place has been around for years, and it consists of half a dozen termite-riddled local houses in various states of disrepair. It's only saving grace is the proximity to the Mekong river and riverside walk.

The place looked deserted, and the staff told me that there were very few tourists in NK. I took a stroll along the promenade and the lack of any sort of tourist seemed to confirm her view.

Up early at 6 am the next day, back to the bridge immigration, check out of Thailand, over the bridge, check into Laos with my various annual visa application documents (no problems at all) and a taxi back to the airport.

It's nice flying into LP because of the views:

I picked up my motorbike and paid 20,000 kip ($1 USD) for the overnight parking. (Actually the guesthouse staff refused to accept any payment, so I put down a 20,000 kip note and made a runner before she could give it back to me).

Nice ride back to my house, stopped in a village to buy a bunch of fresh bananas and lychees ($1.50 total) and I'm home in time for all my evening online lessons - although feeling somewhat tired

The Mekong is looking very full and fertile.

It didn't look like that last time I saw it. Think I could have just walked across it like all the locals were doing.

Good to know the Chin-Masters haven't turned off the tap just yet.
