Fucked if I'd buy my Missus a gun. Crazy bastard would probably use it on me one night

Why not put her into a hotel or get some of her family members aroundor

if your neighbourhood is that dangerous, i'd be thinking about moving into a Moobahn with security

If you are dead set on it, take her to one of the numerous shooting ranges and gun clubs. They'll explain the procedure for getting a gun licence and she'll get tuition

If your Missus pulls a gun on someone or they know she has a gun, I'd say the likelihood is she has more chance of getting shot
Stick your money in the bank and leave nothing around worth stealing or that is covered under your house insurance

    Also CJ,

Just tell her to point the gun at the ceiling and shoot. She doesn't have to hurt anyone, just scare the shit out of them.

I've previously stated how to buy/obtain a gun.

My bad, Prag, I missed that rushing in to voice my objections

I guess that's the trade off moving into a house out in the sticks with loads of space and land around you to living in a secure moobahn

You end up like some Yank Gun Nut

When we first got burgled my missus was a nervous wreck. A policeman friend lent me a pistol (unlicensed) until my missus got her license. I asked 'what if I was to shoot some intruder with it'? He replied '1500 Baht should sort it out. Mind you that was 12 years ago. So it's more likely to be about 2,000 now.

My missus has a handgun which she doesn't or hasn't advertised so probably no risk of someone breaking in to get it.
I used to work in Indonesia on roster so she was home with her Mum and daughter so she asked me if she could get the gun for her peace of mind.
Being an Aussie I am not into guns and am not familiar with them so I suggested that if she bought one then she needed to go and ask the police to teach her how to look after the gun etc.
Anyway one night I get a call from her and she tells me that she thought there had been a person sneaking around the house so she went out armed and checked the place out. No one there so when she came back inside she told me she couldn't remember whether she had put a bullet in the barrel or not so instead of checking it out properly she just pointed the gun at the bed and pulled the trigger. It was loaded and now we have a hole in our mattress. I almost pissed myself laughing and she wasn't happy. I asked her if she was practicing for when I was asleep.
Another time I asked her whether she thought she could actually shoot someone if they broke in, she looked at me and said what do you think?
My response was , you're crazy enough to do it without hesitation.
So I would prefer not to have the gun but it makes her feel safer so that's how it is.

It's a conundrum and the essence of it all is training.
If I can't get the training we wont get the gun, end of story.

Ootai’s story reminds me of what happened to a friend of mine, years ago. She had a stalker who entered her house while she was working and rearranged her downstairs furniture. Twice. The police could do nothing because no evidence in the days before cctv cameras. Her father bought her a shotgun and trained her to use it. One night she woke up hearing the furniture being moved around downstairs. She yelled for the intruder to leave but he did not. She decided to fire a warning shot. She shot the floor of her bedroom. Blew out her whole living room ceiling. Nothing heard from her stalker again.

55 Kit, i think we should stop the lone female with gun stories as so far its looking safe for Somchai the burglar with an IQ of 74 to get scot clean away.

Deferring to experience, my view of guns has always been much like that of a car, if you're responsible it's safe enough and if not you could end up killing someone. And that's where I move away from commonly accepted mitigation used to protect owners from the consequences of their own actions; iow, if you are in control of say a gun or a car and misuse it resulting in injury to others, then the starting point should have you held to personal, financial and criminal account.

Thai guy I know, well connected, has 2 shotguns in a gun safe with two serious looking padlocks, which owners will know are tough enough to resist entry without their respective keys which were in separate serious looking safes, one of which required both key and combination to open; I don't know if the gun safe also had it's own lock, probably did; two teen kids, old and sensible enough not to play cops and robbers. Can't speak for the ammo, but with such restrictive access to the guns maybe it was buried in a neighbour's yard.

Sure I know accidents do happen and the usual arguments against gun ownership, but never having had one myself best is to rely on the views of those that do/did. Afaik he may have had them for target practice or some other sport or whatever, but being physically in his house they are also subject to use in defence.

From what I saw it would take several minutes to reach the guns in an emergency, assuming a cool head and that ammo was nearby and accessible, both of which are highly unlikely. So a question to gun owners: do you believe such measures are really necessary, considering the types of situation in which those guns may be needed tend to start and end within a minute or two?

Gun Control- Jim Jefferies. Its comedy but he makes some valid points.

Burglars in Thailand aren't much different to elsewhere. They are opportunists and they'll look for easy targets.

E.g. if they really want somewhere they'll check it for dogs and get the poisoned meat ready.

Clear evidence of CCTV, Burglar alarms and a gun in the house will usually put them off. You don't actually need those things (although at least two of them are recommended), but the perception that they are there is very effective.

Do a proper risk assessment and avoid any areas for concealment or restricted view access.

Get motion-sensor security lights, that sort of thing.

Getting in a gunfight should be the last resort.

Crossed my mind as well, as my missus can be a bit hot headed some times . But I suppose that the bottom line for me is that as fond of her as I am - I barely trust her in control of a can opener.

In my years and experiences here an intruder will avoid using the easy access points. I have 3 gates accesses to my property and they never used one. They came over the 1.8m wall after walking across muddy fields. The second time I was burgled they poisoned my 2 Cocker Spaniels. Why I don't know as they didn't the first time.

That's because they prefer to get in where they can't be seen.

We don't go wandering outside in search of intruders. Instead we phone a neighbour to drive round the outside and see if he can see anythiñg untoward. We do the same if someone calls us.

As Prag has said, it is easy enough for wife to get a gun licence and be trained by local police.

The locals have hand made firearms of varying quality and reliability. They are usually cheap one-shot wonders that will work in emergencies...

Police told us that if we shot an intruder outside our land then we should drag him inside before calling him...makes the paperwork easier.
