good majority of Thai folk do not know how to properly water trees, shrubs and lawns. They sprinkle it and call it day because they see a cloud in the sky and say it's going to rain.

Enjoy the graduation ceremony. I didn't see the Jesus Slippers set out by your wife.

I have the opposite problem... the gardener loves to water, morning, noon and night he waters. And waters... and waters...

He's always watering. Young trees sit in puddles of water and drown, the pot plants die, my Rosemary bushes lasted about two weeks, and yet he keeps on watering. I just can't stop him.

A couple of days ago, late afternoon there were storm clouds building, thunder in the distance, windy squalls, and I found the gardener watering. I asked him why he was watering because it was about to rain? He said, 'not sure about rain'.

Sure enough, thirty minutes later we had a torrential downpour. I said to the gardener, 'lucky you managed to get the watering finished before the rain!'

But sure enough, my sarcasm was lost. My daughter would have got it.

No, for some reason the daughter has started laying out her holiday stuff on the dining table, ready for packing. Those are her beach sandals.

She 'graduated' from Primary today and will start school in the Autumn as Secondary. We had a long, drawn out ceremony this morning and I'm glad I didn't follow Willy's advice and wear a suit... I would have been the only one. Jeans and shirts or even polo shirts seemed to be the order of the day. I stuck on a proper pair of troosers and felt a bit over-dressed. I also wore proper shoes but reckon I could have got away with my sandals, no problem.

Man you are lucky. My family seems to worry that it will cost too much monry so they sprinkle plants every 3 or 4 days and call it a day. Of course over watering is a problem too. What is irritating for me is I can show whoever is going to water while we are gone, my wife can show them and we come back....Dead. Trip before last I had to replace an entire section of lawn and 3 of my wifes young fruit trees died. While the grass wasn't important to her, she bent some ears for quite some time on her fruit trees dying and I think most of the neighbors heard it too.

BTW, your sarcasm to your gardner was funny. Sad he didn't get it.

They only need watering once a week, if that and only a good drench if it hasn't rained and they are young trees

You need to do a roster for him

    Sun - no water
    Mon - Water
    Tue - see Sun
    Wed - see Sun
    Thurs - See Sun
    Fri - see Sun
    Sat - see Sun
    Sun - see Sun
Mon - did it rain in the last 6 days, yes -see Sun, No see Mon

    Set up a well system.

We've got one here, works great. It's constructed out of those big ass round concrete molds you see people make tree beds out of. The 200 baht per month water bill isn't exactly a massive saving but not having a bill that needs to be paid and if you miss it you cannot pay late and need to go to their foxin' office, is useful. Also negates there being an unknown leak past the meter and a bill for 78,000 baht arriving.

Scrapped the well system. Was always problematic with the pump and losing prime then they would never water. All good now. I just added a full property sprinkler system with timers. Problem sorted.

    Select one family member.

Promise a handsom reward for watering while you're gone.

Explain that cost of replacing dead plants, trees etc, will be taken out of the ...reward.

Nah, just joking, won't work either.

Consider yourself lucky, when they try to start 3 fires on your lawn to burn some plastic, and they can't find a lighter.

You aren't Mendy. This BS of giving out graduation crap to grade school kids is like when kids play and every one gets a trophy, win or lose. Its all BS in my opinion. Its about being PC for everyone.

To be fair going from all fun and games in a primary international school to the hell hole that is IB, iGCSE "you're on your own mate" style of revision and assessment is a big step.

    You're overthinking it, imo.

If the kids enjoy it, where's the harm?

    It's a milestone, after all.

^ Yeah, the kids had a great time. I went from village primary school to the local comp a year earlier than this... no graduation but different circumstances, different time. My first day at the comp didn't start until 11am so we went apple scrumping before walking down to catch the bus. Good memory.

Anyway, my cheer is being west bound on Highway 2, getting the hell out of Korat (H2 is Korat's best feature, btw), daughter sitting alongside, sans wife and loaded up with Ya Dong cos the taxi was late. Small bottle of YD in my pocket and dowloaded yesterday's Ashes highlights to watch on me phone.

Life doesn't get better... apart from the cricket of course.

Honestly Cyrille, IMHO I am not over thinking it. If everyone gets a trophy win or lose what's the incentive? Same with school, you start giving them graduation celebrations for every little level they all lose incentive and moreover the expectation is set and they cry when they don't get that attention. I am in total disagreement with all this trophy graduation stuff.

In sports, you win you get a trophy and the loser goes home. It motivates them.

Same with School. We need to stop this graduation stuff as it sets this expectation. You finish kindergarten, you are done,. You move to elementary grade school. You finish you start intermediate school in prep of High School. You graduate High School that's a milestone. Then when you graduate College that's a milestone.

It's my opinion that the reason so many of these kids nowadays feel entitled. They are spoiled.

@ Mendy. Not taking anything away from your daughter moving onward and upward. That's the natural progression of education. Cheers

They have a graduation (more like a goodbye party, as they move to a new school) at the end of kindergarten. The end of primary (Year 6) and the end of high school (Year 12.)

No one considers it an incentive for anything whatsoever.
