hahaha - some exciting action.
The rest of the crew must think you're a strange one. I'd just whack a little corner of it to take home in my pocket. (provided you have a geologists hammer with you, which probably you dont).

Mendy, over page ... rock in the pipe with a 'told you so' ... post of the year thus far!
Graphic photos.
Respect.
Ship it back and bang it in on expenses.
Mendie chisel your name on the rock and drop it overboard for future geologist to find.
I already had the hotel email address in my contacts list, so it made sense to just make a repeat booking. They know me now and this was easier than wasting time trawling through endless lists of unknown hotels on the off-chance of finding something else suitable. And besides, the room had a good coffee machine.
And I'd dispute No. 5. Rocks don't cost money, a wise geologist can collect them for free. Although in saying that, the boulder wedged in the suction nozzle of this dredging machine must have cost the Client several thousand pounds in lost operational time.
Cal, I kind of like the idea of immortalising my name on a glacial boulder lying on the seabed of the North Sea plateau... but you have to be realistic on what the chances are of another geologist picking it up in another 8000 years time. And besides, we're not allowed to throw anything overboard these days.
It reminds me a bit of when we used to support a pipe lay behind a lay barge... you'd see all sorts of obscenities the welders had spray painted on the sides of the newly laid pipeline lying on the seabed.
No... I've decided to keep the boulder in the geo office as a training aid... it's a busy industry just now and we're becoming inundated with trainee staff geos. In fact one such Norwegian trainee we have onboard just now, of the female persuasion, wanted to take the boulder back home for her garden... but I told her to keep her hands off my rocks.
But anyway, I'm happy now as I found another smaller, more manageable boulder wedged in the tracks of the dredger when it came aboard yesterday, so I have one to take home for my collection.
Of course any geologist worth his salt will immediately see my deliberate mistake. This is no boulder... according to Wentworth it's a cobble. My very own glacial cobble!
If I was really pushed to be more descriptive, in my professional capacity I could probably stick my neck out and call it a flat cobble... possibly.
I'm usually a bit camera shy but because I'm in such a good mood about getting my Thailand Pass I thought I'd make an exception tonight.
We have a couple of days at Johan Sverdrup to finish up the dredging campaign... the third largest oil field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The field only went into production in 2019 and has an expected life of around 50 years.
This time tomorrow I hope to be in a taxi heading to the airport... but nothing is certain of course.
We have no boulders at this location so we finished the dredging no problem... the dredging machine and work ROV are now secured on the back deck..
We just have a few hours survey work to do close in to the platform complex before we can depart.
So launched the survey ROV...
This should all be pretty straightforward... a few hours work and then a 10 hour steam in to Stavanger. So long as we leave by 10pm tonight everything is Hunky Dory.
But this b@stard boat is working around 700 metres off our port side to the south west... trenching a new pipeline (dragging a huge plough along a newly laid pipeline to trench it below the seabed).
The current's coming from directly from the west... and the bladdy visibility's so poor we can't see a thing down on the seabed. We're now WOV... Waiting On Visibility! About 20 people on this boat hope the visibility clears very soon.
There's a lot going on here at the moment... many vessels completing another phase of pipe lay and construction and a lot of work happening on the platforms.
That red semi-sub is a Floatel (a floating hotel!) and can accommodate over 400 personnel. It's completely independent of the platform complex and maintains position by DP.
So I have a few worries about making my flight tomorrow before I can turn my attention to raising the bar in the Dinner thread next week.
The daughter's sent me a few pics from home over the past couple of days and my mind is no longer on the work. It's always hard to concentrate on the last shift and my thoughts are now at home.
Not strictly speaking 'offshore' pics, but anyway...
The same gang playing.
Tommy in the gym.
And Coco in the gym... and it looks as though she's been chewing my Thatchers Cider bar mat (sweat rag)... but I don't care!
And Dan with her tail drooping... she must be missing me!
And last but not least... Anna on her chair. The daughter says that she spends a lot of time on her own and hasn't really made any friends yet. I'll have to sort her out next week.
Just gotta get this work finished!
^ Brilliant work!
#hescominghome
^ Wow, what a great glass that would be to drink Leo from!
Looks like my last shift will be spent searching on the internet.
I bet those taters in that screen saver look tiny next to yours at the mo.
You could learn a lot from your daughter's non offensive canine photos...or maybe not.
^ If you look at the top pic, Max is just about to get it on with Yogi. I think my daughter knew exactly what she was doing. She's growing up way too fast.

^ Note how she quickly pressed the button and most probably squeamed, rather than pausing and switching to HDR
Safe travels bro. You must be buzzing right now. Did you manage to get that stop you wanted and your back bacon?
If not Sloanes in Bangkok, as Armstrong will testify is right up there.
^ I wish that was the case... she sent a set of four pics of Max and Yogi. Here's number 3... I'm not showing the last one cos it gets a bit graphic.
She's 10 going on 15. Just before I left home 6 weeks ago she was doing animal reproduction in science. Now she comes out with words like 'vagina' and 'penis' and it makes me most uncomfortable. I still like her to call it a 'thingamy'.
But on the plus side, at least it looks as though the gardener has mowed the 'lawn'!
And thanks, it always feels great to get off a boat even after all these years. We never made it over to the UK in the end so no back bacon, the west of Shetlands job is coming up next week for the next crew. Tomorrow we go in to Stavanger and there ain't any Norwegian food I can think of that's worth taking home. Maybe some dried and salted cod?
Maybe I'll visit Sloanes but to be honest shopping for bacon isn't high on my list in Bangkok.
Anyway, it's Tuesday and time for me scratcher. I'd better check your list!
“ Maybe I'll visit Sloanes but to be honest shopping for bacon isn't high on my list in Bangkok“
I bet it’s not…
anyway, safe flights. Provided you make them!
Safe travels!
