Know nothing about the The Cathouse, but seems to be warmly remembered.
Only 'freebies' I got was my favourite place (which I know you frequented) was the old Bangkok Beat on Soi 7/1
Damm I miss that place ... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I still go, sometimes into Big/Top Dog or the Bar opposite next to Hooters and watch the Ladies and want-to-be Ladies turning up for work.
It's still a novelty because I live in the West now.
---
Was a bit partial to the Bar, one on the corner, down the stairs about Soi 31/33/35/37, forget exactly.
Live Band.
Apparently a 7/11 now.
Anyone know for sure?
It was right above Big Dogs and run by a nice Dutch guy.
I did like Bangkok Beat, try Hillarys number 2 ? It's opposite Fitzgeralds
(old Hanrahans) just down the road on Soi 4 and has the same kind of vibe and live bands and freelancers
Gotta love freelancers, at least you feel like you've pulled although they do like to thieve
Spent most of my back in the day (mid to late 60s) time in Yaowarat district. Chinatown before it became touristy. A maze of allyways where one could find the most deviant sexual experiences imaginable.
Opium pipes and a box of Thai stick next to every bed.
Checking in was a trip. "Ah! Mr. Norton. So nice to see you again. So what can we do for you this visit. We have a new lady from Ethiopia. Very talented! Discount on the Thai stick just for you. Your normal room is ready. We installed a ceiling fan for your comfort. Here is your welcome drink. The Sato you so like. Oh, here is a photo of the Etiopian lady."
"Good to be back mama. Will be here for 5 days. I'll have 10 Thai sticks, the room and the Ethiopian lady. Have $50 burning a hole in my pocket. Will that cover cost for all?"
"Most certainly Mr. Norton" says mama with the big smile and shiney gold 2 front teeth.
5 days to remember.
Sorry off topic.
Agree with most of the old mongers above re Nana. Early days great. Later not so great. Woodstock was the fav for me.
Spent most of my drinking days at Soi Cowboy. Watched the Twin Towers come down live at an outside bar.
Normal routine was grab something to eat. Walk around the corner to the Cowboy. Sit outside bar. Have a couple until the band started at the 5 Star. Drink there til 2AM and crawl home.
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect,"
^ That's what we want.
What a fukkin ledge. Love it
My reputation as a bonified monger affirmed.
Old mama preferred green backs to baht for payment. She got wet between her ample private bits when she saw Ulysses S. Grant.
You might think $50 was incredibly cheap for the 5 day package deal but my monthly salary at the time was $120.
I recall around 2003 'owning' a couple of bars just up the road at Sukhumvit 1 Plaza. Life seemed good then, but it was all a smokescreen LoL
Santos I believe was Indian and owned a live music venue on soi 4 of which he sold many times over, without the knowledge of his partners, and I heard he pocketed about 16 million baht before being locked up.
He come across as a very likeable bloke and I was surprised when he got busted.
My bar of choice was Jools owned originally by Kim Fletcher and I still meet up with some of the lads I met there all those years ago.
i also knew Taffy quite well and he was quite famous for his free barbecues not his hairy pies.
My office is situated on Soi 4 and I avoid the Plaza these days as it is just not as good as it was.
Woodstock is one of the best bars I have ever been to. The hamburgers were great. There was no pressure by the staff at all. It was s real shame when it closed down.
Interesting story. Peter Gale owned both Woodstock upstairs and White Rabbit downstairs. One bar +girls the other just a nice restaurant. Kim Fletcher ran White Rabbit until he left to open Jools up the street on Soi 4. Peter kept both going for as long as he could. Woodstock stayed up and running till 2016 on Soi Thonglo. During the filming of Good Morning Viet Nam Robin Williams took most all of his meals in White Rabbit, and was often seen enjoying the vibe upstairs at Woodstock.
Nana, is a shit hole these days,I much preferred Patpong back in the day,the girls knew how to take care of the customers.
double post
The carousel at Hollywood 2.
My dirty bastard mate sat in gynecology row with his tongue out waiting for the girls to come around. Some would actually jump up and short cut the circle to go by again.
Oh and the black guy selling burgers
And Kim Fletcher has a picture of Robin Williams with napkin across his forearm like a proper waiter serving him a meal.
Kim's partner when he started Jools was Mathew Swire who still has a share in Cathay Pacific Airlines among other company divisions so I believe.
Now he was a rebel but a great bloke.
Use to spend some time in Washington square. Liked to have an occasional change of food at Bourbon st. Moved to Ekamai now but Doug was still there last time i went. 2 years ago now.
