Plastic is to a certain extent porous. They smelled the food inside, then one ate a hole through which others went, following each other as they do.

You then mistakenly thought it was still hermetically sealed because when you squeezed it, you felt pressure inside. But if you had kept squeezing, the inflated bag would have collapsed as air went out slowly through the tiny hole.
