Some random machinery photos should clear the sand-filled air and possibly save this thread.

At twentyish my friends and I went for a ride out to a place called Holy Hill. It's near a place where two glaciers met and formed a ridge. A road on the ridge is called hogsback Road.

It was near there I rode a CB 650 off the road. I had gunneed it out of a turn and as the next one approached I could not break as there was gravel in the road.

Downshifting rapidly I looked for a place to ride into the cornfield. Unfortunately the front tire didn't make it through the ditch. It stopped abruptly collapsing the front shocks.

Momentum carried me over the handlebars in a cartwheel.
I recall running through the air and tumbling down into the field.

The bikes shift lever had bent and got a bit scratched up. My friends held it upright while I braced my feet on the machine and pulled the lever to straiten it so I could shift gears.

    Sorry no pics.

Rain, sounds innocent enough and began with a few spits, then went full monte on an unlit highway around 2am, could barely see the wipers. Pull over...where? - blind to the hard shoulder with a ditch beyond, and anyway even if we could have found it and pulled over some poor sod's guaranteed to rear end because like me the only thing anyone behind could see to follow if they were lucky is the blur of the car lights a long way in front, which is what I had to aim for and don't know what he was aiming for, but for sure if he went tits up so would we and in turn those behind. Which meant each time the blur went out of sight around a bend or hill I had to estimate where we were on the road, hoping somewhere in the middle, and follow his vanishing point till I got him back into sight. Which also meant I had to speed up to get closer, against 3 Thais already shreiking at me to pull over and me trying to explain my only point of reference is that feint light ahead as the front passenger twice tried to grab the wheel! Couldn't get worse, except it was a pickup and became wobbly as the back started filling, which I couldn't tell them because I honesty expected someone would open a door for want of something to do! Lasted about 10-15 minutes before it eased enough to safely pull over off the road, at which point they got out smartish and ranted against the bad guy! My first marriage was also scary.

    Ah, the weather.

Often times on the Great Lake Michigan it can get pretty spooky in terms of wave action. I've been on edge more than a few times.

One time out it was very foggy. I followed a charter boats light out of the harbor. I expected the fog to lift in the morning but it didn't. Back then I had no cell phone or GPS. Just a compass and a fish locator.

We trolled around for hours fishing and waiting for the fog to lift so we could get back. Still never lifted. I decided to head west and watch the depth gauge. Finally got close enough to see land. I was in twenty feet of water by then. From 120 to 20 took awhile. I headed south. Fifty feet from the breakwall when I could see it. Listening for the fog horn I fownd my way to the gap. We had been out for seven or so hours. Lucky we didn't get hit by a cargo ship or have engine trouble.

The next day I was off to Gander Mountain to buy an E-Trex plotter.

I never let on to my stepson that this could have been a really bad day on the lake.

I once came close to flying in economy because the pointy end was full.

Fortunately, someone was not entitled to their upgrade and was shifted back where they belong with the great unwashed, allowing me to take my rightful place among the elite.

Mandalay, I got some horrific food poisoning once to the point of collapsing in my apartment; so off to the clinic I went to get an IV drip of fluids- yay for adulting! Take my place on the bed and the nurse reaches into a bucket of unsealed needles and sticks me in the arm. Played it safe and went on a month of PEP treatment- not nice waiting 3 months to know if I had contracted something, as unlikely as it is, better to play it safe.

While there are aspects of Myanmar I really miss, the healthcare is not one of them.

PEP brings with it some interesting side effects, lucky for me no stomach issues. What I did get was a month of night terrors and low mood during the day. Work was 85% amazing in Myanmar, so was able to get through it. Would be a different story here in Mongolia haha

In high school we were at a party. They had a pig roast and a band so yea, a pretty big bash. Later in the night a friend of mine got into a fight with some dude. My friend was taking a good pounding. I recall them rolling around on the ground near a parked car.

I was going to try to pull the guy off my buddy. When I stepped in a friend of the other guy pulled out a pistol, pointing it at me he said step back and let them fight.
Naturally I obliged. Though not scared it was an eye opener. Luckily for my friend it didn't last all that long.

That reminds me. Another friend and I were out hunting squirrels when we crossed through some farmers land.

We were walking about ten feet apart when a shot rang out. The bullet ricocheted off the rocks between us. We both heard the ricochete as we ended up looking at each other. We hot footed it the hell out of there pronto.

Again not really scared but brought to a heightened sense of awareness at that moment.

Rolled an F250 Ford in a snow storm. I was hauling a trailer of fire wood home in a snow storm. I was kinda lost and took an unfamiliar road. I was tooling at a good clip and was thinking how well the truck was handling.

I was only going about 45mph when I crested a hill to see a 15mph sign. I tried to slow her down quick but the road was iced up. Eveything played in slow motion as I rounded the 90 degree turn. I was sliding off the road three quarters of the the way through the turn.

The passengers side wheels lowered into the ditch and the truck roll onto her top.

Not the worst thing but it folded the roof in to where my head was touching it. The windows were shattered as well.

The shitty part was trying to hold my weight with my left hand while releasing the safety belt with my right. I hurt my neck in the process unfortunately. It took a month or two for that one to heal.

I'll never buy another truck with bifold style doors. Their is no support pillar and that is why I believe the top folded as easily as it did.

Drove down Phu Rua mountain in Loei in extremely heavy rain with water coming out of the jungle either side as well as rolling downhill. There had to be at least four inches of water on the road despite a severe incline. Mercifully, no Thai driver behind me and I reached the bottom at a bend which my wife reassuringly had said was called "Bend of 100 Corpses". Turned left on the road, breathed a sigh of relief. About a quarter of a mile later there was a white pick up which had gone off the road on the right hand side, another couple of hundred yards and a red pick up had gone off on the left hand side. They had been driving on a level road. Thank God nether had been behind me as I descended.

In view of the fact that they dealt with the situation properly, I shall suffice to say it was a Middle East carrier.
