    Was I just scammed?

Not that it matters much, just curious if this is a scam.

Outside my hotel having a ciggie. There were a few Indians around, women, children, and one old man. the women, 3 of them came close and one spoke to me.
"Excuse me Sir, may I talk to you?"
    "Sure".
"We are refugees from Pakistan and our husbnads have gone to work in xxxx (I forget where, somewhere in Thailand). We don't have work permits and we are frightened. I have 4 children. Could you buy some milk for the children, please?"
There being a 7-11 right there, and it involving kids milk and not money, I said yes. Went into the 7 and she followed me. I picked up a 2 litre of milk and asked her if that would do. She said yes, so I bought it and gave it to her.
Outside the shop, the 2 other women then swamped me and asked if I would buy milk for their children too.
I said I can't feed everybody who asks me and that the 2 litres should be enough for all the kids.
First woman says she can't share from a big bottle and could I return it and get them individual smaller bottles. (Less cost-effective, but whatever).
OK....so inside the 7 again and asked if I could swap this 2 litre for some smaller bottles. Woman turns up to the counter with a dozen medium sized (maybe 350-400 ml?) cartons of milk.
& staff reluctantly did the transaction of refund and new (much greater) purchase.
    Done.

Ok, it's not a lot, and it was milk not money, and there were definitely kids in evidence, but I do wonder what else they hit people up for and if they are actually in dire straights.

Anyone heard of this sort of thing?
    Don't get this in Hatyai.

You have given them about 100 baht for milk. Perhaps the next guy will give them 100 baht for bread and the guy after that 100 baht for soap and shampoo or something else. You are helping pay for their shopping expenses even though their husbands are working.

gone to work in xxxx (I forget where, somewhere in Thailand). We don't have work permits and we are frightened

Your help has not changed their situation one bit. They still don't have work permits and are still, allegedly, scared.

Anyway, whatever the truth to their story, watch you don't get mugged or your pockets picked on your way back. They will have seen which pocket your wallet is in and possibly how full it was.

Thought this was going to be about "curry" powder.

But you fell for the old milk scam.

Apparently it all goes to a churn near Banglumpoo.

Well, no since they appear to be staying at the Holy Redeemer Church on Soi Ruam Rudee. Christian refugees from Pakistan are quite feasible.

200 baht and he purchased the produce himself.

Fair play to him. Most farangs would have turned and looked the other way.

    Not mentioning names of course!

    Good advice!

I have often purchased similar items and had the girls at 7eleven open the pack and serve the kids.

Cuts anterior motives off at the source!

    And the kids are happy!

Reports of scams like this in India and Cambodia, where they're in league with the local shop owners, return the items, split the cash. But probably not likely if it was a 7-11.

Still would have opened them though.

So another reasonable thread turns into shit!

You could almost predict the frustrated principle shit-stirrer rear his ugly bonce once again.

Once again Maanaam you done the right thing, purchased milk for the kids and it cost you 200 Baht.

of course he was scammed. if they'd have tried it on a thai they would have been told to f. off and got a smack in the mouth, which is why they always go for the soft touch guilt ridden whitey.

no need to beg for food in thailand. the temples, mosques and churches will always feed the deserving.
