Would consider it if living in the same city (and near) as the property.

Getting a steady 10% and 8% from CM and Bkk condos after agent fees, so a lot easier just to do that and forget about them.

If easy to go over and manage it all every day it might be worth it, just bring yer Adidas trainers in case you need to do a quick, sharp manfan from the rozzers.

A female friend of mine and her husband (they were newlyweds at the time) did a cross-country drive across the US, using Airbnb for their accoms. Sometimes they stayed in a room in a house/ apartment, sometimes they rented the whole apt, depending on the place & cost. Her experience was overall good & she was the one who pointed me to the site. I think they did the trip in '12 or '13 and the site wasn't too famous yet.

Another friend, he went to Tokyo last year with his friends and they used it as well. They rented the whole apt - I think they were 5 or 6 total. Since they were young backpackers, they were able to save on accoms (versus hotel). They also had the option to cook in the apt.

I've browsed the site but haven't used it. I considered it for my trip to Taiwan, but used hotels in the end. What I didn't find too convenient was that in some listings, you could only check-in after 3 or 5pm, because that's the time when the owner is available to meet you. Unlike in a hotel wherein there's 24-h reception. I also considered the location. Some listings may be cheaper than hotels, but they're farther from the bus stop or MRT station and you'd have to ride a taxi or whatever to get there. Sometimes the additional cost of taxis or effort to walk (when you're already tired from sightseeing) isn't worth it.

Maybe some points to consider if buying a condo or house and putting it up as a listing...

Letting a private condo on the basis of ad hoc rentals through social media and AirBnB is illegal in Thailand unless the property is licensed and under current legislation condominiums cannot be licensed as appropriate accommodation to be rented out on a commercial hotel basis. As well as being a breach of the Hotel Acts it would be a breach of the Condominium Act and given most owners do not inform the police of such occupancy it is a breach of the Immigration/Police Acts.
The fines are quite heavy and of course the tax implications if the earnings are not declared can be a bit tasty if someone were to dob you in......

    I've used it twice.
Both good experiences except for perhaps location.
In retrospect, would have preferred a hotel for one of them as it was just too far away from restaurants, coffee shops, etc.
But the people were nice and the places clean and (otherwise) as advertised.
Thought about doing it with one of my rentals but, it seems a lot of work. (greeting, cleaning, locking up valuables, etc. etc. etc. )
and always the worry that they are crooks or will bash your place.
