Have any members had Snakes as pets?

    Serious question.

If you ever had (or have) snakes as pets what was your experience?

There is great advice here below:

I raised a rosy tailed boa from inches up to 6 feet and then sold her to a zoo during univ. Her name was Sadie and she liked mice and rats.

    What was my experience?

What kind of open-ended, nonsensical question is that?

    What's Thailand like? derrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Never, ever, ever, will I keep snakes as a pet.
I get cobras coming into my house every year.
Once whilst I was on the toilet I saw one make a dash for the drainage pipe. I am scared to death of snakes.
I scream and get the neighbours round. I always second glance anything that moves inside my house just in case its a snake.

Take a look at this nutter. Who in their right mind would keep these as pets?

Yes, I had one when I was a teenager, it wasn't happy living in a biscuit tin most of the day inside my school locker. So I found it dead one day, died of natural causes, or lack of sunshine . I put the dead snake on the school sports field, and the bugger came alive and left me.
Moral of the story, snakes can play dead.

When I was cycling home in the rain yesterday, I met a snake that was literally jumping as it crossed the road in front of me.

No quick sliding along - this bugger was jumping about a foot in the air on each movement. Not sure what it was, not a cobra, grey sort of thing with a white underbelly, about 2 feet long, not big.

Never seen a snake move like that before.

I used to get baby cobras coming into the house years ago in Phuket, had to beat them to death with the broomstick cos of the baby in the house.

More recently at my B&B in Phuket, there were many adult cobras in the rubber plantation grass. No problem, just don't walk quietly - give them time to move out of the way.

    ^ Could've been a variety of 'krait.'

They're mostly docile in the day...tho hang out in holes, so the rain may have put some skip in its step.

After handling snakes is it essential to wash your hands?

They might carry small mites or bugs

2 days since my last snake sighting, and here's another! It was almost in the same location, crossing over the road, but today with no rain. This snake was big, about 2 metres long, thick as my wrist, and a very dark grey all over. It moved in a typical snake manner, (so no jumping).

Any clues what it could be? I haven't seen an all-grey/black snake before. (I said to myself as I rode my bike towards it 'shit a black mamba!')

    Giant Blind snake
    Dragon snake
    Cobras can appear grey

    Total guesses...

....the black mamba is widely considered the world's deadliest snake. Black mambas live in the savannas and rocky hills of southern and eastern Africa.

I had a King Brown snake I caught once in Australia back ABOUT 1983 but the wife at the time said I couldn't keep it. 555 Ended up cutting its head off and stuck it in a tree. A cukkoboro (sorry spelling) came and gobbled it up. I've caught snakes, spiders and all kind of critters since I was 6 years old. I've killed 4 cobras here in Thailand that were in my village. My neighbors ASKED me to kill them.

Depends what you mean by pet. I let a Bronzeback tree snake share my garden with me. Came down from its tree and sat near us every evening for a month. I fed it the occasional gecko and all seemed okay until the dog got jealous and trashed it.

Cobras and rat snakes are turned into soup dishes before I manage to ask if they'd like to be a pet.

Kraits don't get asked and dont get eaten. They are just killed for daring to tresspass on our land.

I never said they could... they sense the vibrations from your feet.

I met yet another snake on my cycle home from school today. This time I just missed cycling over it's head! It was about 1 metre long and a beautiful green colour, sliding across the same road as before, and jumped a little when my bike wheel skimmed passed it's head.

I should have my camera handy for these unexpected snake sightings.

My cousin taps rubber every night and he stamps his feet as he walks in the plantation. He doesn't see cobras "boi boi", just "boi". No flip flops.

IT says in the Koran that God punished the snake for deceiving Adam, so the snakes punishment was to crawl for ever, maybe loss of hearing was thrown in as well.
