I would highly recommend you lot all pop $1000 for a drone when you have never used one before. Genius. ☺️
Yes mate I have seen his Thai license which looks like a drivers license but approved by the Thai Air Force.Originally Posted by crackerjack101
He also explained to me about the regulations in flying a commercial drone and the restrictions are quite complex.
Heights and flying space restrictions are intense and insurance cover has to be set up every time a commercial drone leaves the ground.
It all sounds a bit too onerous for the hobbyist.
I have no doubt in Oz the restrictions would be even worse.
Yes License for commercial drones are complex and required but not for consumer. I've had mine for quite some time and do not have a license. The key is not to fly in places that will raise an eyebrow. The Mavic Pro has NFZ's (No Fly Zones) in the software and will tell you. Lets be honest here. We all complain about no police anywhere and now someone would worry about a license?
While the Mavic is a top flight piece of hardware it is user friendly for even the beginner. You can set the it in "Beginner" mode which limits height, speed and distance.
If you decide to get one, buy the bundle, get the extra batteries and case. Its worth the money.
I will try and post a few vids I've recorded. I take mine everywhere I go, If I can fly, I will.
What kind of drone do you use?Originally Posted by bsnub

Restrictions are not anywhere near airports, military bases. the biggest restriction is simple common sense. You can do like the Fn korean tool did in BKK and fly his drone inside a temple and lose control and hit walls and shit, You can fly it near an airport and get it sucked into an engine and kill people.Originally Posted by Iceman123
I haven't tried Active track yet but the drone will follow you at a set distance and vid.
Also it has a really cool feature of RTH (Return to Home). If you lose sight of it you hit the button and it flys back to you.
You can control the camera and switch between Vid and Still.
My wife and I took a mountain hike, before we began I did a vid up the mountain to see the path. We watched on the phone and said OK, we know where to go.
DJI have a new one coming out this month aimed at th0e beginner. Its smaller than the Mavic and starts at only 20,000 baht. You can control it by hand gestures too. It goes up to 98 metres, only travels for 16 minutes and 2km though but thats long enough to get a few selfies
That is extraordinary. Seriously. Takes selfies to a whole new level.
All joking apart I find this technology amazing. I just don't think I have the patience or the will to invest in it, financially or mentally.
I have a very good friend who is quite a renowned wild life photographer. As he puts it, the whole drone/GPS thing is "an absolute game changer".
All very impressive.
Yeah its called the "Spark". A friend of mine in the US just got his eval unit. He is one of the guinea pig guys for drone companies and tries all that stuff out. He said its OK. Fits into a cost bracket that most can afford which will lead to more problems later as people will do more stupid stuff with them. He has always felt they should be more expensive not less. This way it keeps the knuckledraggers away from owning them...
That aside, the Spark is smaller, but has fixed prop legs so not as portable.
You know CJ. Its a great way to spend a day. You can fly, come back, edit the vid and host it. I have flown over a few lakes and rivers. The view is incredible. The vids I took on the islands down south were beautiful. I did a launch off the boat I chartered for us for the day and vid my wife snorkeling and hovered over her at 2 meters then took it up, flew over the ridge to another cove and saw it packed with people. I followed along beside a few catamaran's. Its great at the end of a day to sit back and watch the vid'sOriginally Posted by crackerjack101
My wife didn't get it when I bought it but now she sees the vids and loves it. In fact she wants to fly it. I said NFW, I've seen you drive...
mate used his drone to record our football match the other day. was brilliant. clear and gave a good view. Would love for it to become the norm.
trying to upload it...

I'm going to take it back to the shop next visit, but I imagine the seller will tell me to sod off.
Is there a 'trick' that I'm missing when it comes to flying these drones?
Here's a video that I just made:
Groping women when you're old is fine - everyone thinks you're senile
I get it.
It's brilliant technology and I love it.
The trouble is I'm a stingy git with the technological skills of a dead squid.
I wish I had more faith in my ability to learn new stuff.
Pathetic, I know but it's the truth.
We'll see. In the meantime good on you all for going for it and I'll thoroughly enjoy the results of your endeavors.
Carry on.

I got me a cheapie just to practice with and on its maiden voyage it got stuck in a tree and I spent an hour getting it down. Damn thing really moves but I still have not got the hang of it completely. I will not let myself buy a more expensive one until I can fly it without crashing. Far from an expert as I wish I was because flying these things is pretty incredible.

You know Bsnub, I used to think the same and bought and flew some cheapos. As the saying goes "You get what you pay for". You will spend countless hours trying to master a POS then get a top bird and they almost fly themselves and more over they fly completely different so you start over.Originally Posted by bsnub
Again not convincing anyone to buy a DJI or any other brand, just stating my experience.
I was hoping with the thread to see if anyone else had taken up the hobby.
I took mine to mad and back and found that after the flight I needed to recalibrate the gyros - I had an SYMA X5C - and just a quick search on youtube showed me what to doOriginally Posted by Simon43

I've been thinking about getting one since seeing a few YouTube videos taken around El Nido.
As I already own a GoPro, I originally thought about getting a GoPro Karma, but after watching a lot of reviews decided to get something better..... just haven't decided what yet...
