Someone actually tried to " high five " me the other month. He seemed momentarily perplexed and then crestfallen when I resisted before asking me somewhat hesitatingly why I declined to engage in the gesture. I decided to spare his feelings, " because it is a fucking stupid and utterly inappropriate and wankerish thing for a mature English man to do " was my initial reaction, and replied that I was not an American and felt uncomfortable in emulating one.

Frankly, i was really quite embarrassed. It was as if he had tried to give me a peck on the fucking cheek, to be honest.

i would rather engage in the occasional highfive, or even its bastard offspring, the fistbump (sometimes known as the "powerfive" ) with americans, than endure the revolting public displays of intimacy that occur when meeting frenchmen.

I don't like hugging strangers.. what happened in NZ since I was away? came back and now everyone is hugging each other... gives me the creeps...

I don't mind hugging my Nana (one of my favorite things to do, in fact)... but I draw the line at hugging my brother's gf's - it's awkward...

Then again I have always been tactile. Agree that high fives are inappropriate for Brits. Just like calling some chap bro is.

On the subject of the English language as spoken in the colonies, it is a bastardisation of the original nations of occupation. French, Dutch, German and English. At least they had the sense to use English as the basis for future communications.
