Yes, some of it can be trite...That's quite clear...But it can often generate a greater understanding...

As stated earlier, I've incorporated "mate" into my international "lexicon"...I occasionally use "eh?" as a Canuck...Mainly when we Canucks joke to each other about that international "stereotype"...The closest the Yankees have is "huh?"...Gawd, love 'em...What you learn when you travel...

I like the word "cheers"...

And I still find, sometimes, it's easier to say "I love you" in another language...

Which reminded me...hey Storekeep, you realize that this year marks 25 years since we've seen each other in the flesh? At our mutual grandmother's funeral.

Of course you probably remember I lost my other Grandmother that same year within a less than two month span of Grandma D. I've been thinking about both of them a lot lately. What do you think they'd think about what the world has become in this day and age?

That is why Cameron was wrong to use his revelation to try and impress voters. Because it raises the obvious question: would he call the President “bro”, or “mate”, or whatever Bullingdon-esque equivalent he favours?

My guess is that he wouldn't, because the relationship is not one of equals and any such lack of formality the other way around would send Secret Service trigger fingers twitching. The “bro” was just as dismissive as George W Bush’s infamous “Yo, Blair”. And if that one hadn’t been overheard you can be sure that our super-slick former prime minister would have had the sense to keep it to himself".

Mate is a Brit term, used when you forgot the name of someone you should have remembered.

It depends on the context, and tone/intonation of the voice, when spoken.. I find it quite endearing between us Kiwi guys (or non Kiwis even) I wouldn't use it
with a senior, or in a professional environment... got my brother-in-laws saying it all the time now.. lol... miss them.. will see them all next week... damn, only a week before I move to Jappers...

we are all brothers and sisters in the greater scheme of things aren't we not?

I used to use "dude" and I'm not sure how it came into my vernacular.

I've stopped using it, but if one uses - especially too often - it sounds....dumb.


Origins come from the South West in the 19th Century.

I've never used "bro."

Now "mate" is Australian and I used to hear it at times. Don't see nothin' wrong with it.

Nah... it's nothing negative, I will miss that salutation in Japan... believe it or not, the people I will miss the most from NZ, are my Maori and Pacific Island bros (jing jing)...
