Doomsday preppers head underground as bunker economy enters mainstream society
Bunkerscape - A view of Vivos xPoint in South Dakota, where Milton Torres has moved permanently
Milton Torres is worried about the state of the world — so worried that the 42-year-old biomedical engineer has packed up his life and moved to a remote, underground bunker in the Midwest of the United States.
He's part of a growing number of Americans preparing for social, economic and environmental collapse.
"I don't even know what is real or not anymore," Mr Torres says.
"They have us so confused, but they don't want to panic the people about what's happening.Mr Torres is the first to move permanently into Vivos xPoint, a community of 575 bunkers designed to accommodate up to 5,000 people in a former army munitions site in South Dakota.
"You think the government is going to save you? If you think that, good luck."
He paid $US25,000 for a 200-square-metre underground bunker, which can survive water, air, and gas penetration, as well as significant internal and external explosions.
"It's a steal — especially when compared to a house that won't survive a meteor strike," he says.

Guess I am a prepper too. I have a portable gas cooker and a few gas cartridges stored. Hot beverages will be available for several days.
...I always keep a paring knife available in the event the walking dead show up...
Hey y’all! A great list today!
First two… is not empty shelves issues but a security issue and items needed to stockpile..so you can get the rest of list.
The next 8 is all about stocking up because of the shortages!
Prepping is key and this is a good list for the Crisis and Shortages we’re facing!
Have lived through some ice storms where the camp stove came in pretty handy for us and the neighbors for a week. A CME could knock out power for 6 months or more so we keep several bags of rice and several cans of white gas on had, and about 5 gallons of non-ethanol gas for the generator. We live near water so no issues on that front as we have filters in our back-packing stash. During our ice storm though, flushing the toilet became the big issue as it requires the most water. I guess a real prepare would have a pit toilet out back.

Funnily enough I did see someone post the other day in one of the Thailand groups as to what food he should get for "when the whole system fails".
When (if) I get back to Burma (business visas are suspended right now), my plan was to stock up with food and water to last a few weeks, just in case it's too dangerous to leave my accommodation. My ham radio rig would be a great way to stay in contact, but since Aung San Suu Kyi got 3 years for possessing walkie-talkies, I better leave my rig in Thailand
Groping women when you're old is fine - everyone thinks you're senile
Yes indeed, there are many (many!) places that would be more agreeable than Myanmar. But I have some perhaps old-fashioned views. One of those is that one should never break a promise that you have made. Well, I made a promise to 'my god' some years ago that concerned Burma, and I'm not about to break my promise just because of a few pesky bullets
