    The English away day

My son's school organised a trip to Khao yai for the paying students of his school which was going to cost 245,000 baht for the night and day,it was supposed to be for a English learning trip, they then decided to go for the cheaper option which was going to the Playa la ploen in Burriram which cost 149,000 baht

I thought it a bit strange considering the expense for a night for 44 students and 10 teachers.

He returns and had a good time, he informs me we had a 1 hour English lesson.

When we picked him up from his school,I asked one of the farang teachers why didn't they spend the money on an intensive English week or such, he tells me that's exactly what we advised them, though ignored suggestion completley.

At time Thai logic astounds me.

the govt gives the school an annual spend - they need to submit the expense reciepts - this is what subsidises all these "resorts "in the middle of no where - all govt departments get this seminar money

the first place probably was not prepared to invoice for 500k

These English camps have promoted themselves since memory and quite common within the Thai schooling systems.

Yet, almost always about the outing, less the extensive English courses.

We had an English camp in Kao Yai.. with my school (Marieraksa) Korat.

Not sure how much they charged each student, but the cheeky sods loaded up my truck with stuff, teachers hitched a ride.

Was fun though.. cowboy theme, teachers dressed as cowboys.. singing and dancing on stage.. still have those songs stuck in my mind..

Oh, English Camp cha cha cha, Oh English camp, we are haaapppyyyyy.. la la la... I was camp leader (no jokes about me being 'camp' guys, I know what you're thinking...).

Nice BBQ, fun games, activities... kids slept in tents, teachers had shared rooms (I had a private room) being school royalty innit...

Not much English to be had... (parents got had though heh) I snuck off early. We each got a share of the profit. At least I did. I expect everyone got a cut. I know for sure Sister certainly got majority share.

The English education system there is flawed, it's just a show and pony act. Kids can't read phonetically (they only recognize sight words)... should be much more direct emphasis on teaching phonics IMO. C-A-T sound out the letters... that is the foundation of reading *think back to your childhood.

The greatest gift you can give a child, is the tools to help them read.
Teaching kids phonics is very satisfying. In my P1 class, I could write any 3 - 6 letter word on the board and the kids could sound it out. Granted, they might not understand the meaning behind the sounds, but I swear they could read any word.

If they foster the love for reading, they will see fast results. Final point being reading in Thailand, is overlooked in favor or speaking/listening, merely to show off to parents that Somchai Junior can parrot a sentence...

Reading is the most powerful tool to facilitate and accelerate learning.

I'm wrong, I should have learned to read/write Thai, before learning to speak it.

Forgive me for being so serious, back to being a dick now.. promise.

Yeah, but that's heavily subsidised with EU development money, to show scruffy Welsh kids a bit of civilisation.

Nearly all museums are free to schools in the UK it's the coach travel and insurance that the parents get stung for.

It's an English day out, it's like those expensive French trips that the school organises when they get older that are expensive. How much French they learn is about zero.

The high school where my eldest attends has organised a skiing trip to Canada, guess the cost of the 10 day trip for a 12 year old?

    £1800!!!

Needless to say very few of the 250 kids in the year are going.
About 20 with filthy rich parents and about half a dozen very lucky teachers.
    Major piss take.
