One day an old man walked past 2 teenagers.
One teenager knew the old man and said to the other "That old man is 90 years old".
The other teenager said "Who wants to live to be 90 years old?".
The old man heard them and replied "Anyone who is 89 years old".
Jeez lob you must be the life of the party.

It used to be true that life had no purpose. We are all just a link in one of the taxonomic diaspora of the replication process of life on earth and our species and all the other species had no purpose.Originally Posted by lob
However since homo sapiens recently mastered the use of applying his brain to discovering the mathematical and scientific truths of nature our particular species has become the only species that does have a purpose. We have become the universe's self-fashioned lens through which it can understand itself. If we participate in the progress of human society in whatever way we can then we have contributed to that process. So life is not purposeless.
Perhaps the best way to think about death, is maybe when you die you become a butterfly.

I understand you to mean that existing and living are two different things, EH? And while just existing ain't that bad, trying to find a purpose in life is a fools errand, ie an attempt to do something that has no chance of success.Originally Posted by lob

Your conclusion or hypothesis, whichever you prefer, is debatable apparently. While trolling the internet I found the following argument (among others) for the purposeless life. In fact, the assertion is that the purposeful life is a Western idea and the purposeless life an Eastern perspective:Originally Posted by MaanaamI take the Eastern view, giving credence to lob's post as well. After all who can be happier living in the moment, than a little child? She/he certainly has no other purpose than that albeit it's hardly a conscious desire, innit?Life is purposeless. And it is beautiful that it is purposeless
It is very difficult, particularly for the Western mind, to understand that life is purposeless. And it is beautiful that it is purposeless. If it is purposeful then the whole thing becomes absurd – then who will decide the purpose? Then some God has to be conceived who decides the purpose, and then human beings become just puppets; then no freedom is possible. And if there is some purpose then life becomes businesslike, it cannot be ecstatic.
The West has been thinking in terms of purpose, but the East has been thinking in terms of purposelessness. The East says life is not a business, it is a play. And a play has no purpose really, it is nonpurposeful. Or you can say play is its own purpose, to play is enough. Life is not reaching towards some goal, life itself is the goal. It is not evolving towards some ultimate; this very moment, here and now, life is ultimate.

wot e said..... wot b/s e said. so where is the purpose in/of understanding life . u spend an entire lifetime getting the better of it all just to end up purposeless.
fortunately i have no prob with it all, i accept its pointless end and do my best not to shit on anyone or do bad things. i am happy-ish, comfortably off, plenty of friends, had a usfull life , in the context of u need to live, no complaints.
parties are for losers who want,,, are looking to gain happiness, same for alcohol and drugs, religion, other such props. ur normal party goes along the lines of most people standing around bored to fuck, embarrassed to be there,, which drives a few to freak out and demonstrate how much they are enjoying themselves by, ffs, dancing like they have cervitus . right word ??? spelling anyone. if u were happy to be there why the need to get lost in the fog of booz. me, i'm happy 90% of the time and enjoy banter with all i speak to, laugh all the time and dont take myself seriously.... ie my life is a perpetual party. come and join me. u can get pissed if thats ur thing. we can start a religion. 5555
I think there is slightly more to it than that. Being happy without treading on others toes is all good stuff but...Originally Posted by lob
I hope so since making some kind of practical contribution to the advancement of the human race (apart from simply having kids - not that that is easy) is part of what gives meaning to life if you accept that the human species is as important as I reckon it is.Originally Posted by lob

But, how much self-consciousness does a child have? That develops, and as the young human grows mentally, desires, and the means to attain those desires, grows.
I think we are talking about two different things: A natural purpose of humans in general, in which case I agree, there is none (unless one subscribes to a belief in a God, which I don't), and the purposes we decide on for ourselves.
