    Running shoe showdown

In the blue corner... weighing in at a spritely $20 are the cheapest running shoes available to humanity - K-Mart generic brand (no model)

And in the bluer corner... weighing in at north of $200 are a pair of New Balance 1080s

    Show us your impulse buy-img_20220311_191216-jpg

I went for a 6km hill run in the K-Mart beggars' specials and I was surprised how good they felt. They were replacing a falling apart ageing pair of trail shoes I have been wearing for running and they felt equally as good as the old pair, even a bit comfier since the old pair had gone a bit stiff.

But then I put the 1080s on just to walk round the house they are in a different league. I have not bounced so bouncily round the house since my New Balance 855s from 10 years ago.

Looking forward to popping their bright blue cherries and finding out if they really are 10x better.

Good to get reviews on some good sneeks. You just can't get the idea walking around the sports shop and trying not to look like a proper plum.

I have the Under Armour HOVR 2 offerings, also blue.

I was surprised how much I like them, as I bought them online during a kind of open quarantine thing. They attach to a running app and give you all kinds of information such as mapping your run, stride, steps etc. they even tell you the angles at which your feet hit and leave the ground and offer improvement tips.

They were 3,000 baht I think.

You never seem to talk about or have time for work. Are your parents billionaires or something?

    If not, any advice?

All my family going back 2 generations are school teachers except my granddad who was a plumber

I am a chip off the old block having changed the washers in my shower taps 3 months back

I still work but some of it is in the defence sector so I could tell you about it but then... I would have to kill you

Anyway I am keeping it real with my K-Mart krud-busters

Popped the cherries on the electric blue runners on the same 6km hill run and they are comfy enough to absorb the shocks for my aging knees

Now I have scored a pair of mid range 490s for the beach too

Bidding more than you should on an auction for something you don't need satisfies the "impulse" part however hopefully a higher bidder negates the "buy" part soon.

    Or I'm fucked.

Someone told me I need a 'box' for my tv to watch the F1. This really was an impulse buy, a random pick off Lazada. It has access to some stuff that doesn't interest me.

What do I need to do to it?

You will need to install whatever app you plan to watch F1 from. There are free services like IPTV (thousands to choose from) ranging from around 25-40 pounds sterling for the year. If you purchase this, you will get installation instructions. If you're completely clueless then maybe better to borrow a teenager from somewhere. I've used IPTV before but the quality is just not good enough for my bar. And 3pm (not actually allowed to televise) football/soccer games would just buffer and be unwatchable. MotoGP and big fights were the same.

Look up HD Prime TV and give the free trial a go.

That's very different from my experience.

HD Prime buffered waaaay more than the IPTV I use now.

Most memorably for the last world cup final, of which I saw precisely nothing live.

Maybe you could share your IPTV supplier then. However, I'm still waiting for you to learn how to share a link to your pan/wok from Lazada.

Thanks. I've made an account. I cannot see a free trial. Anyway, I'll buy a month and see what happens.

I used to use something with a very similar interface. I don't recall what it was called, so far as I can remember it disappeared one day.

I have used Live NetTV on my phone. That still seems to be alive although friends tell me some streams have closed down. It has Sky F1 and sometimes it is also on Fox or ESPN. The challenge as you say is buffering. It is usually okay during qualy and the build up to the race, then ..., it stalls at the race start. Last year I think I saw the first corner only twice.

I've not had any problems with HD Prime. I prefer to use it through my laptop (just log in through the website) than my android box which uses the app. I mostly just use the box and app on a side TV in my bar for Sky Sports News and Premier League games. For big events I log in through the laptop on the main screen behind the bar. If there's a clash of events I do both and use a mate's login.

IPTV is a bit fiddly. It may have came a long way since I last used it, but every now and again they get busted and you have to reinstall the new app all over again and set it up. That's ok for me but my staff are not up to it and I work away. For this same reason I just pay for the yearly subscription to HD Prime, as they don't know how to top up each month.

As long as your WIFI is decent you should be fine.

    Enjoy.

I think the F1 is on UK Channel 4.

I've had a good time with TV Mucho. No in demand catch up but can record programs in advance.

Man, you're being a fkin dick these days. Have you come off your prescription or something?

My wife bought the wok, and I looked for it but couldn't find it. She had been waiting for weeks for it to be available, she bought it, then it disappeared from view on Lazada.

I tend to go for Asics or Saucony for running shoes. Their over pronation mitigation seems to be better than NB which I found out having received a nasty jones fracture out running in my now binned NBs. If your not an over pronator though they certainly are comfortable.

I have got a pair of Asics Tribuco Trail running shoes and they are very good. They have gel soles and feel bouncy in a firmer more rubbery way compared to the soft foamy bounciness of the New Balance.

In another footwear department, after 2 years of faithful forest service, my $30 K-Mart boots were showing their age so I thought as an experiment I would replace them with a pair of $175 Hard Yakkas

    Show us your impulse buy-img_20220319_184618-jpg

This is an experiment in economy.

In order to extract the same value from these bewt boots I will need to still be wearing them when I am 65. Watch this space...

At the moment I am enjoying putting them over my nose and inhaling the rich aroma of the full grain nubuck. Almost as good as new car smell.

Did you sleep in them Loops,by my calculations you're a youthful 57

Yakka means hard work in Australia slang, useless bit of info.

Best Ozzie boots I ever had were lace up Blunies with steal toe caps made from Kangeroo leather and stained crimson.
I would love another pair of boots like them.

    You're not helping Balders

I want to purchase a pair of kangeroo lace up blunies in crimson the same as the ones I purchased 20 years ago in Melbourne for $75.
