Scot shot in chest hours before Philippines wedding

A Scottish man has been shot during a robbery hours before he was due to get married in the Philippines.

Tarek Naggar, 44, was outside a shop in Cebu City when three men demanded he hand over his wallet.

When he refused to give it up, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.

Mr Naggar, who is from Milngavie in East Dunbartonshire, has undergone surgery and remains seriously ill in hospital.

The joiner, who recently had been working in Sweden, was due to get married this weekend to his fiancée Angie, who is from the Philippines.

He was standing outside a convenience store in her home city of Cebu in the early hours of Thursday when a motor scooter with three men clinging to it pulled up.

His best man Chris McLaughlin, who had flown out bringing his friend a kilt for the wedding, was a short distance away when the attack happened.

Mr McLaughlin, 40, from Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, said: "I heard a commotion and ran over to see what was happening. A guy pulled a gun out and shot Tarek in the chest. Then he pointed the gun at myself."

He said an ambulance was called but failed to show up and they had to travel to hospital in a rickshaw.

    Ricocheted bullet

"Tarek's fiancee was trying to call taxis but there was none stopping. I was on the floor with Tarek. He was conscious. After about 10 minutes or so a guy stopped in a rickshaw," he told BBC Scotland.

Mr Naggar was treated at a nearby emergency room, then transferred to a larger hospital for surgery.

"The surgeon said the bullet went in the right side but ricocheted and travelled over to the left lung. Miraculously it didn't go through his heart, it actually went behind his heart.

"He seems to be recovering well. He's conscious and awake - and has been talking the last couple of days. He's out of the ICU and has been moved to a recovery room."

He said he did not believe Mr Naggar had any health insurance, and the family have already had to make payments for his treatment.

Another friend has begun a crowdfunding appeal to raise money for his medical costs.

Never carry too much money and give up the wallet in a heartbeat.

Also hope he gets fitted for a decent set of glasses during his Hospital stay.

    Tarek... a speedy recovery.

I'm sure she has a lovely personality.
I must admit, my first thought was an elaborate, if dangerous, cold-feet scheme.

I hope the Scot gets well soon...

As for their looks, not all can be hansum/pretty, or be rated as a 10. Are all ya guys/gals here 10s in looks/body? Heh... The girl has a nice smile, IMO.

That said, I hope he recovers fully. JMHO, the girl, as a local, should've known better for them not to still be on the streets in the early hours of the morn. I would guess between 1-3 am, the article didn't say the time. That's when most petty crimes are committed, whether in Cebu, Msnila or etc. Cebu province or City, or Manila, aren't the safest places to be walking around at night. Or the guy should've given his wallet Sigh...

If anything, he's done better than her, though he'd look a little better if he wore a proper shirt, not some awful football thing.

Whilst I agree that football shirts are not generally acceptable, in this case this is a Celtic shirt and places this chap at the pinnacle of fashion and taste.

They are never acceptable, though they do serve the unintended function of letting everyone else know that the wearer should be avoided at all costs.

He was obviously a soccer fan, is it just me or does her head resemble a soccer ball?

Why do several posters here believe he wouldn't have been shot if he simply gave his wallet over?

Seems just as likely they would have shot the guy after recieving the wallet.

I mean they shot the guy for nothing anyway. Probably would have shot the fucker to cover their tracks had they recieved the wallet.

Because irritating three men who are attempting to rob you is never a good idea outside of Hollywood movies.

    Or if you're a ninja.

I'll be sure and carry a wallet and money in case I get robbed so I have something to give the robbers so they don't shoot me.

God forbid I don't and they shoot me.

So your theory is that they were going to shoot him anyway.

Why would they go through all the foreplay then? We not just walk up behind him, one shoot, one take his wallet as he falls, then gone with minimal witnesses and minimal fuss?

You don't think so good. Slick.

It was the early hours of the morning and the Scottish was probably pissed, so taking into account the fact that he is a hardcore Celtic fan we can assume he put up a fight or told the three robbers in no uncertain terms to f off.
The robbers fearing for their lIves then proceeded to shoot the pissed up aggressive Celtic fan.

I hope he makes a speedy recovery because they make a lovely couple.

    He sure is unlucky!

I would say they might be a match if this was in Glasgow but in the lads playground I think he could maybe do a bit better than that

Maybe the gunman was guardian angel sent to rescue him from the jaws of impending disaster.
