    Nosey UK government bastards!

I noticed my Siam Commercial ATM card had cracked in my wallet so went to change it for a new one as I have done many times before.

The lady serving me did the normal sign here sequence but then asked me for my UK address.

I told her that as she can see from her records I've had the same Thai address for more than 12 years and I had been with the bank for 14 years.

Yes, but you need to tell me your address in the UK!

Bearing in mind I'm sitting there with my wife and she points out that we have a joint account, a house and kids and NO FUKKING UK ADDRESS!

In the end I gave them my parents old address and made up a post code, everyone's happy and I get my replacement ATM card.

    David Cameron is a [at][at][at][at].
I would post pictures but life's too short.

this has nothing whatsoever to do with the uk government, but everything to do with the thai government.

there is no exchange of information between uk and thai banks.
neither are their any double taxation treaties.

i suspect they wanted to check your uk medical records for a previous diagnosis of paranoia.

I got a new SCB ATM card a few days ago. Left the old one in the bloody ATM again.
They only asked to see my passport. No request for a UK address.
Perhaps the Junta wants banks to act like immigration and just make different shit up for every area?

Nah. Its the f*cking Thai banks. If you are a foreigner - you MUST have a foreign "home address". Quite a few documents now need you to add your "home address". As annoying as hell since I have been out of the country for 30 years. Again, for now use my mums address.

May be the cashier has relatives in the UK, and knowing full well you're here then they go round and burgle your gaff.

when i moved here (thailand) ten years ago, i was told by the inland revenue as it was then called that for individuals it is barely implemented due to the difficulties in obtaining information from the thais.

might be a different case for companies and wealthy thais in the uk.

but yes, you are right. there is a treaty, and i stand corrected.

Never been asked for a UK address. Only complication I have had is sending money back. In this case the UK was a pain, not Thai.

I would just use my farang scrawl writing - same as I do when I got a sleeping ticket and had to sign it; somewhere in the road side bins of the traffic cops extortion check points, there are 7 tickets signed Fuck You Cu nt.

I did scrawl it, then she asked how to spell every word as she typed it into her pooter. Obviously not linked to a database yet as the address and post code didn't flash up as not matching.

For some reason I can't give you a good rep for that. Says I have to spread the love around first even though it's weeks since I last gave you a good point.

That's sorta like what I would have done. BS humourous address.

Thai banks are dumb, and their staff are dumber.
When Mrs Manaam and I went to open a joint account, they would not accept her Thai passport as ID.
As a matter of principle, and because I didn't want to drive back home to get her Thai ID card, I argued the point, through supervisor, manager, and higher manager until I convinced them that if Mrs passport is accepted all over the world, including Thailand as valid photo ID, then it trumps the silly little ID card that is totally useless once out of Thailand.

I have NO US ID, photo-ID or otherwise, other than my passport. I haven't lived there in decades.

I went on a rare visit about five years ago and towards the end, I had to take a domestic flight to another US city.

Clerk: Sir, I'll need to see a photo ID.

    I hand over US passport.

Clerk: That won't do, Sir. I need a photo ID, like a driver's license.

I point to front of passport and slowly read "United States of America". I open passport, point at my picture and slowly articulate "Picture".

    No go.

Fifteen minutes later a supervisor shows up, explains to the clerk what a passport is, and off I go.

    Programmed, stupid people are everywhere.

Would bide well if such a wall would keep Americans at home withholding their pesky interloping worldwide!!!

The requirement for a passport would keep 99% of Americans out of Mexico, not least because they do not know what one is.

When I did a runner from Aana resort (for a valid reason) on Ko chang, they hammered my UK home phone number and threatened with tourist police so I paid it eventually

Had to give full details when booked directly online with their site
