Heh...At the first sip, you know whether it works for you or not...But sometimes it helps to know what's in the brew...

Recall a time when my Brazilian friends mixed up a brew of the strongest shit possible and had it in a huge cooking pot on the stove...They "forced" me to take a thimbleful...Meanwhile they were babbling on in Portuguese and laughing...

Later they told me that one of them had spent a lot of time in a submarine and it would've driven them all crazy under the water for so long if they hadn't added acid to the blend...

Think Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and that "doink" sound that resonates frequently...Enough to drive one mad if claustrophobic...Can't imagine it on acid...

Anyhow, that was some powerful coffee they had brewing on the stove...A witch's brew, indeed...
I think they were brewing mushrooms, not coffee.

Three coffees for me today. Three different tastes.

Coffee 1 - with my breakfast.
An austerity approved cup of hot brown water: instantly re-hydrated brown granules, served at home in a “buy a refill pack, get a free mug" mug. Cost – pennies.

    Coffee 2 - for lunch.
A very good cup of espresso based coffee – a flavoursome hot latte, nicely presented in an air conditioned coffee house. Cost - more than the instant Nescafe above - and worth the money.

    Coffee 3 - afternoon splurge
Another espresso based coffee, this time an Americano with added milk. However, it wasn't very good and I was disappointed. My disappointment abated slightly a while later when I realised the restaurant had failed to add the coffee to the bill. (Of course, next time I return to that restaurant I will let them know.)

A typical cup of black coffee only contains around 2 calories.
If you want to drink coffee for its health benefits, drink your coffee black, without sugar, no-dairy creamer or cream, or flavorings.
Fascists dress in black and go around telling people what to do, whereas priests... more drink!

initially I came to the idea that they are owned now by UCC, aka UCC Ueshima Coffee Co. of Japan, the company that first brought canned coffee to the world back in the 1960's. A decent ethical business who does actually tend to use decent beans at least for their brands, but then I realised that although they own the Lyons Coffee brand, and as part of their empire sell Ground Lyons coffee, instant coffee was not part of their portfolio.

So then I was intrigued. The Lyons Instant Coffee website mentions that it was once owned by Kraft ( of the warren "the scumbag needs a bullet in his fat smug face " buffett) empire, but of course, what their website does not mention is that after they bought it they immediately closed the UK factory and developing the land, and the brand disappears. Hansard shows a little of MPs faking interest about this.

So then a long and winding road leads you to a couple of ex Kraft blokes who bought the brand usage for Lyons Instant coffee who then set it up. I wonder where they get the actual coffee from?

It's a good business model for these times - get your hands on any old brand that people will remember, and then fill the jars as cheaply as possible and sell it in Iceland and the pound shops. People have an emotional link to a name like Lyons remembering that is was a fairly decent brand back in the day... clever buggers. 20m squid revenue in the last year... but spent 22, to get it.

Camp indeed, Chas. A picture of two men - one wearing a dress and the other wearing a skirt! I bet they had a gay old time together! Perhaps even a Highland fling together .. the Gay Gordons?

He is indeed a representation of a Gordon Highlander. The other gentleman is a Sikh soldier.

My mum used to use it for coffee cake too. I wonder if you could use it for Tiramisu.

Back to Starbucks, I haven't gone not just for the prices. I just find them a bit clinical looking and full of young people using their laptops.

I prefer older cafés, with wooden tables with cigarette burns in them and old men supping their red wine at the bar like they have for 40 years. A bit of atmosphere.

Ah, getting to that time of year for an Irish Coffee. I have all the ingredients except the whiskey.

And Nige, i do not pour coffee into my mouth like that. It might stain my nighty!!

Older cafes with wooden tables brings memories of espresso corretto with grappa as the preferred additive. Fantastic as a late morning pick-me-up before olives and white wine ovrr a long chat about the headline news.

Better still, the wife didn't understand the lingo so I manage double alcohol rations...smiles all round!

I'm actually starting to think whisky is a bit like coffee after reading this thread as in you have so many of all different types and varieties and many of us settle for whatever we get served without knowing any better, but when you are pointed in the right direction your whole perspective changes and you realise there is a whole new world out there you were oblivious to before and once sampled there is no going back. Although I am yet to experience this with coffee as I'm quite happy with 1 cup of instant shit in the morning, I have seen the shock and thus transformation in people when they have experienced a single malt whisky that has been matured in a sherry cask as in it opens up a whole new realm of experiences for them that they never knew existed but until coffee can get me pissed i'll happily remain ignorant.
