Oh ya...I wanted to punch the friggin idiots who did that (sometimes I got away with giving them a kick in the shins). And always a long-drawn out wai, like they're Hamlet doing the "to be or not to be" scene. FO. This always came from the FNGs on their first trip away from mummy and daddy, and usually Canadian gits.

In 16 years here I have never seen one Thai offering to shake the hand of another, in fact I cannot recall any Thai offering to shake mine, although had more than a few girls offering to shake my todger.

When I see a group of those high school/middle school boys....and they give me that hello/I love you/fuck you routine.....I just give them a big hearty "Hello nice to meet you too" while grabbing my package....you should see the looks on their faces when I do it......Some of you white guys should do it sometime....it works great.

Farangs that brag their stunning gf is free, till you start questioning them, and then justify their extortionate outlays not as payment but rather voluntary contributions towards a new wardrobe or home extension.

I understand where you're coming from with this BH...but it hardly equates...and as already stated I have never seen a Thai offer to shake hands with another thai and if you have do let us in on the secret...

Thais have been wearing ties since the reign of King Rama V who brought the fashion back from Europe, so no that doesn't piss me off. I'm a kiwi but I don't get pissed off because our Maori brethren don't wear their flax skirts anymore...it's just called "progress"...

However, you're last point does piss me off. I have many Thai girls in my training classes for flight attendants who wear crosses around their neck and I generally ask them if they are Christian. They look at me as if I'm crazy...but most of the time the answer is no. It's just a fashion item for them...

The whole amulet thing gives people a false sense in invincibility and induces the feeling that they can now do whatever stupid thing they like and the amulet - or entity behind it - will protect them...most foreigners see this as mere superstition and therefore question the sanity of those who wear them...

I don't think the OP was refering to those who have genuinely converted to Buddhism...most of the amulet-wearing farangs I see are around bars, which doesn't sit well with fundamental Buddhist beliefs!..

yep, and both piss me off...I'm a great believer in the separation of church and state...and feel that there are plenty of other things which people can wear as fashion items without encroaching on the religious...

If I saw the "drinking buddies" shaking hands, yea, that would piss me off, because its just thoughtless adoption of rituals that belong to other cultures, in the belief that its cool or maybe trying to convey the impression that they are worldly wise. Do actually they understand the significance and derivation of the handshake ?

As for the Crosses around their necks, I see a lot of that, because my daugters go to a Catholic school, so the sisters wear a cross, no that doesn't piss me off because they understand the significance, and its a visible expression of their faith.

Yea, add one more thing that pisses me off, old cvnts with bald heads, pony tails and earrings.

To me all of this is pretty harmless; even amusing in a pitiful sort of way.

I do find it odd that the Thai adoption of a silly Western custom like the wearing of neckties is seen as "progress" but adoption by Westerners of a Thai custom is enough to piss someone off.

Klongmeister, I'm with you on the separation of church and state but I hardly see how the adoption of a religious icon as a fashion item constitutes the encroachment of one upon the other.

BTW, I last wore a necktie on December 1, 1979....
