The last beer I had before coming away to work was that tin of Leo, second from left at Swampy. I thought 195 Baht was pretty expensive at the time.

My next beer was a pint of Ringnes last night, the cheapest beer available at my hotel for a mere 128 NOK, or 460 Baht.

My hotel only does two kinds of beer... and tonight they had no Ringnes.

I had to go for the 'juicy' Frydenlund at an eye watering 168 NOK a pint, or 14 quid in real money.

It was nice, but not 14 quid nice. And I didn't even get a matching glass.

For 600 Baht I could almost get a whole box of Leo at home.

As I was having my after work pint the barman mentioned that Norway doesn't have a 'drinking culture' as he called it, like us Brits.

I said that I'm not bloody surprised at 14 quid a pint.

"Well, I went out for just the one and came home three days later" said no solvent Norwegian man ever.

How the fuck is an alcoholic supposed to maintain a habit over there?

For £14 I would have thought that included the glass as well, still extortionate at that.

One thing you can't grumble about in the UK is the price of alcohol!

    Everything else is ridiculously priced.

If I didn't know any better I'd surmise that the government would prefer a nation of alcoholics to a nation of rebellious civil war rioters.

The life of a contractor is a lonely one.

Because I'm a regular stayer, this hotel gives me a 150 NOK voucher every day I stay, which I use for a free pint of after work Ringnes. It would seem rude not to.

Back when I was alive this free pint would have been the first of many more around town, but no longer. I need my sleep these days. After my solitary pint of Ringnes I retreat to my room to watch something on Netflix.

I must admit though, I'm starting to consider a trip over the road!

^ You motivated me to do some research Joe.

The good lady 'Jong' seems to run the place over the road from my hotel.

    This is her price list.

I'm no linguist, but assuming that 'nakke' means 'knackers', then that top option for 300 NOK seems reasonable. That's 25 quid in real money.

    My needs are pretty standard.

I don't know what 'rygg' is... I think it's pronounced 'rug'. Maybe that's for the female clients?

Anyway, to keep this on topic, always with an eye on my health I had a glass of water with my pint of Ringnes tonight.

^ I'm not proud of it but that Ringnes is 11 quid a pint!

And I'm off the booze at the moment.

And the Norwegians don't do an 'after work' pint, so I drink alone in the hotel bar (not that that's a show stopper, of course - I've had many of my best nights in Korat drinking alone with just my dogs for company).

And, to be quite honest, I'm really enjoying the rare opportunity to have evenings alone to watch series on Netflix while drinking a couple of glasses of wine in my hotel room.

Fvck netflix, get over the road and get some Jong action.

You know it makes sense, you've got one eye on your pint and the other on Jongs special.

I don't have my Dubonnet jubbly for the jubilee this weekend yet so I am making do with some sherry.

If you thought there was a family resemblance here you are not wrong

The mighty Lancaster bomber spawned the Lincoln which in turn was the basis for the contra-rotating 8 propeller Avro Shackleton.

The Shackleton ruled the waves round blighty for over 50 years as the front-line maritime patrol aircraft for anti-submarine-warfare and later airborne-early-warning.
