    What I learnt today.

If you drive several hours over cobra infested road to you local Tesco and mistakenly return with a box of Mont Clair white* wine that is unfortunately several YEARS past it's batch date you will discover that it has aged into a somewhat passable** Madeira in both colour and bouquet.

    * said white wine was only bought for cooking purposes because only girlymen and nancyboys drink white wine, as we well know.
Madeira on the other hand is a manly drink.

** If you drink enough of it in one go.....

A commendable preference and similar to my own.
Unfortunately the good folk at Coonawarra decline to release it hear at 5 liters per thousand baht.

Cali wines are quite drinkable, but on the whole, I think Oz wines edge the at all price ranges. The Oz industry is incredibly diverse for the size of the population.

I should have listened to my dad.

He said "wine is for poofs youth. Let me catch you drinking wine and ..."

Given the size of the country and variety of growing conditions they should be diverse, even before considering grape varieties. They export most of it anyway. A country that produces Fosters lager can't be too picky when it comes to drinking

Fosters...only made for export now I believe.
Don't think they even make it in Oz anymore. Brewed in China or somewhere.

And I'd say if you are talking about riesling & pinot noir, you are correct. I did some good boutique winery tasting in Oregon, and their rieslings in particular knock napa out of the ball park. More fun than the touristy napa/sonoma circuit too, imo.

True- so what to make of a country that drinks more of the slop than we do?

I recommend a rather dodgy British wine blended (that's stirred, not shaken) with a rather dodgy Scotch.

I don't know if it was the picture, Baitongboy's comment below the post or a long-held suspicion as to the quality of Withnallstoke's drinks cabinet, but what immediately came to mind with the Clan Dew photo was this:

I've never come across Clan Dew. Looks revolting.

Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivè, and tastes like crappy fruit juice.

I had a sip earlier and almost boked.

But luckily my trusty box of Chardonney was waiting for me as i wait for a blizzard. It was 2 degrees here today.... All jammied up, not to set foot outside until Monday. Unless i need my B and H, of which i bought a few packets.
