do pay attention at the back there .

BANGKOK, Feb 15 - Any Bangkok taxi driver found repeatedly shunning would-be passengers will soon be at risk having his/her driver’s license suspended or even revoked, the Department of Land Transport chief warned.
    newsjs
The department is considering additional penalties against taxi drivers who turn down passengers as the agency has been flooded with complaints.

Land Transport Department Director General Somchai Siriwatanachoke said the department imposed a Bt1,000 fine on any taxi driver who refused to accept intending passengers since September. However, complaints from passengers over the issue account for over 60 per cent of all complaints regarding taxi services.

To solve the problem, he said, the department has prepared to take legal action against those who repeatedly reject passengers by suspending and revoking his/her public driving licences.

Moreover, Mr Somchai said, the department has invited managers of 35 leading department stores in Bangkok and adjacent areas where there are taxi stands nearby to discuss measures to solve the problem.

All department stores have been asked for cooperation to install signboards publicising regulations that taxi drivers are forbidden to refuse passengers.

He said that CCTV cameras will also be installed at the taxi stands to record the images and behaviour of taxi drivers who violate the regulations.

Call centre telephone number 1584 for receiving complaints will also be publicised, he said.

The Land Transport Department's passenger protection centre 1584 hotline is available around the clock. Passengers may lodge complaints by giving details on the registration number, time, date and place to make it easier for the authorities to track down violators. (MCOT online news)

Outside of this.....taxi fares are still one of the best [and real] values found in the golden land. This is certainly true of "non-metered" variety.

Across the city or across the country.

Maybe when the law mandates remotely fair pay for the work, the law will get the respect it deserves.

Just as you, your wife or anyone else will get the service they desire if they pay for it. Insist on paying the rates mandated by the corrupt bastards and you can wait for the next cab. And the next one.

    And the next.

oh dear, the mad ramblings of the urban guerilla.

funny thing is, when we eventually did get a cab we spoke to the driver about this and he said that he never refused a fare and was happy enough with his income. he said those who refuse fares are usually unreliable, more likely to cheat and are generally despised by other cabdrivers as they give them a bad name.

of course you can see it as workers fighting for a fare wage, although how refusing work will swell their paypackets is beyond me, but you, as one of the forums more ridiculous characters, obviously know best.

I get in tell them where I am going and they drive me there at least 90% of the time.

And how many of us have jumped out of a Bangkok taxi and onto a mocy leaving the poor cab driver stranded in traffic with 40 baht ?

I just ask the cab before I get in - if he/she does not want to go or quotes me a price I close the door and look for the next one cruising by.

there are many reasons why they do not want the fare , and I would ratehr find one who does.

the department of land transport chief would have no idea on the reality on the streets - another dunning kruger thai bureaucrat who thinks the laws of physics follow his proclamations

    Exactly.

If Thailand wants to eradicate bad service then it should ensure the taxi drivers can earn a realistic income. Fares have not been increased for at least five years, but costs have risen considerably in that time. Even the BTS fares have risen this year.

So what we get is drivers working 12 hour shifts with the aid of Red Bull, driving like a bat out of Hell to make their fare as fast as possible, refusing to take fares where the journey involves a traffic jam, and taxis that are in ever deteriorating condition.

I think Bangkok taxis contribute to us having maybe the best public transport systems in the world. One can find a taxi in the most remote parts of Bangkok at all hours of the night and generally they are happy to take you wherever you wish to go.
Not always but most of the time. I'd say the aforementioned 90% is about right.

Compared to say Melbourne, simply as an example, where taxis were like hen's teeth. Sure the drivers in Melbourne make more money but it didn't make finding a taxi any easier!

No one is forcing people to drive taxis in Bangkok and one can always phone for a taxi. Sure it costs 50 baht more which would suit the posters who think the drivers should be paid more!
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

    My experience exactly.

Which is why the whiners are just perpetual whiners rather than people with a point of view.

Upping the fares won't stop them scamming, it will just increase the cost of the scams.

And better service won't shut the whining racist pigfuckers up... they'll just move on to another "condition of employment" to use to disguise their ugly sense of privilege and superiority.
