Lightbulb Walking With Ladyboys - Td Premier!

All three parts have now been uploaded to YouTube!

The second part is arguably the most interesting and where the title becomes justified. The 3rd part (and the shortest at 03:38) concludes the film with footage shot 9 months later round 'Lisa's place' where I try to convince him/her that reality TV is the way forward.

It finally ends with me climbing into a dustbin full of water.

Finally I have done someting instead of just talking about it - I just hope it has the potential to lead to some kind of career.

Look forward to your comments, constructive criticism welcome.

    Enjoy!

Interesting editing, only one problem: the content

Every other shot is about you or a shot of you. Where is the real topic ? or is the documentary about you ?

First thing you learn about producing a documentary is that the producer MUST disappear behind the camera.

You keep showing your face every 10 sec. It feels like U2 on a road trip.

Part IV Edit it to remove the balding englishman. It might become a work of art. Still liked the opening scene and some of the soundtrack.

^ Most of that is padding as I was just documenting my 'holiday' at the time, though it was a five and a half month break between work (the funfair) - so it didn 't set out to be a documentary but has the potential to be one if there was less music video and more interviews so I half agree with you, however I don't think there's anything wrong in the interviewer being seen to chat with the subject as seen at the beginning of part 2 - that is unless you are making a formal documentary for the BBC on a serious matter.

If anything did come of this I'd want future projects to be fun, rough cut and informal. Steve Irwin and Ruby Wax didn't get known by being formal, but they had their own cameramen.

If I am to make another one alone, let's say WALKING WITH JESUS about the cross nailing fanatics in the Phillipines or WALKING WITH PRADA about Hong Kong then there will be less music and MTV style imagary and more dialogue, though I will once again be the presenter, the cameraman and the editor.

I have heard about this Ian Wright guy on Lonely Planet TV but can't find anything on YouTube - anyone know where I can get a link?

You've got the technical skills to make a movie.

But it is lacking in content. Just like you said, too much music and MTV style clipping. It looks too much like a trailer or introduction to another movie that never starts.

Not bad, but not very good either. Next project you should focus on something you want to examine, and do it properly.

If you want to make a documentary about ladyboys, then focus on that. Burping seals and cats stretching are fun, but they didn't really belong in there.

The people featured need to be presented as well... Either by you/a narrator voice/or by letting them do it themselves in an interview, or possibly, more gradually throughout the movie. Otherwise you just annoy the viewer.

All those stretches with frying omelet, riding a motorcycle, a Thai person smiling at the camera etc. are ok as a general mood builder when you are zooming in towards the actual content, but they are not and can not really be the content itself.

^^ you need to make it clear what you want to be ? a reporter ? or a producer ? being both is difficult and there is only a few that could manage because the content was very unique (Irwin was wrestling with fucking crocodile, he was the content)

If it's about a journey of you looking for a ladyboy first time "sex", then yes, portraying yourself in that journey could make sense. But obviously it's not the case.

Your story is lacking focus and it shows, your directing is ok but not as breathtaking that it could "hide" the "generic" story behind it.

I still think you are a bit of a nutter , but I must admit the editing and sound was pretty good. Too many shots of yourself (as others have pointed out), and after watching all three clips, I still thought to myself "What the heck was that all about"? Well done, nevertheless. Find another theme, and perhaps a better story, and you may be onto something.

    Good luck, Scampy!

You have talent as an editor and this shows in the film. If this is what you are trying to show, good job.

Have to agree with almost every other point made here. No way I'm gonna watch all three, half-way through the first one I had to bail; disjointed, confusing; nice technical aspects. Well done, but content was lacking in the extreme. The whole thing felt like an over-long intro.

Yes, the focus of the "documentary" seems to be:

"I am a really wacky and crazy guy, dont you just love me?"

Too much Scampy and not enough of the title subject matter. Also what were all theshots with the old farang ladies about? To show the contrast with pretty ladyboys?

My advive would be to re-edit - a shorter version would be much better received.

However, the editing skills abd general pace show promise.

If I could go back and do it properly I would, and hopefully will. Let's not forget that I put this together with what is basically just holiday footage, it's a quirky pastiche of ideas and mini interviews.

My own critique is that it can't make up it's mind what it wants to be.

It is also difficult to get most people on camera, Soph was up for it and obviously I don't mind 'performing' myself, but even Lisa was very self conscious. The old ladies party was something I would have liked to cover more but it wasn't planned, I had gone to see a friend (The Canadian woman at the beggining) and she had mates over, I couldn't start interviewing them without a little notice.

I am most pleased with the sealion sequence, short though it is. How I ended up swimming with them in a suit is another story but I included it because it's abnormal, as is the way I live my life and at the time it was how I chose to document it.

It was a shame that I wasn't alowed to take my camera with me to interview Sek Loso - that could have been a subject in itself, but as I didn't have a subject I filled in the gaps.

I have a 37 minute feature focusing on the funfair going on strike in China which I will work on splitting and getting online. I don't feature in that at all because there is enough going on with my colleagues, from Poland, Wales, Romania, Thailand, Indonesia, NZ, Africa, Holland and Australia to name a few - united and rioting against the Chinese.

I regret not charging something for the many copies I have supplied, as to weather it would be f interest to anyone outside World Carnival - I don't know.

I stuck some teakdoor videos up on you tube a couple of weeks ago, between them they get about 500 views perday, so people do watch them.

I'm afraid that it comes across a bit like that - just holiday clips joined together.

Good points: sound quality, music, editing, shot perspective (camera angles). You show a real talent for this but need to work on the content.

Bad points: no ladyboys for 8 minutes, and then just some intrusive/uncomfortable interviews. I felt as if they didn't want to talk about their life style, which is what I had hoped the video was going to be about.

So generally good skills at piecing together all the clips with excellent music and clear soundtrack, but the content was like someone showing you their holiday photos... pretty boring. Or maybe for people who have never been to Thailand it'll be more interesting. I think these clips probably mean a lot to you personally and bring back good memories, but if you're going to call it "Walking with..." then you need 50% or more of the "with..."

To answer one question you asked "What the fuck is wrong with you?", I think the answer is "Because I'm locked up in this cage 24/7 and I'm fed up being video'd by ****ing tourists!"

I did like the bit with cat stretching, but then I'm a cat lover.

I also liked the bit with the Marmite, but then......

    ^^ Green for you RD.

I may return in August and make something that justifies it's title, in the meantime - any ideas on what I could do in the Philipines to earn a crust other than write for newspapers and magazines in Thailand?
