I think that one of the reasons "mobile homes" are so popular in the US is that they escape the normal building codes that are applied to more permanent structures. Plus, they're taxed in most states as vehicles rather than as real property. Those two factors combined keep the initial purchase price down and the yearly property taxes at a minimum.

The downside is that they don't appreciate like "stick" homes do. I sold my 1989 doublewide in Arizona last year at a considerable profit only because the land had appreciated accordingly.
