Thread: Deltic diesel locomotive numbers 1962 to 1978

I remember visiting Barry in Wales on a £1 special excursion train ,day trip
from Yorkshire in early 1970's
We went to Woodhams yard
that's where they scraped lots of the steam trains.
It was interesting seeing a few hundred of them lined up
and walking among them

Went to Didcot Railway Centre when I was a kid, great fun.

Here I was thinking this place was full of real men, tough guys, ex-gangsters, old commandos like and to my horror, with one misplaced troll you have been exposed for a bunch of nostalgic, touchy feely trainspotters....sheesh...

Britain's National railway museum at York is a
nice way to spend a few hours .
It has the prototype Deltic.
I remember people used to call them hoovers , due to the loud noise they made waiting at the stations .


Also has a Japanese train, which you can sit in if you wish

Plenty of steam trains too like this 1930s one

For a lot of kids at the time, these steam/diesel engined trains were the noisiest, largest and most impressive pieces of normal machinery they saw.

To drive a steam train took a lot of skill, to stoke a steam train took a lot of muscle. No guns, explosion or bodies which seems to mean so much to you though.

To be honest, some of those 30's streamlined jobs (like the red one above) are the most beautiful machines ever made.

I loved the Deltic, it was a mean looking machine. I can still remember skiving from school and going to Newcastle Central to see the first run through of the Inter City 125 from London to Edinburgh

Does anyone remember that train they tried to develop in the UK for the West coast Line, it tilted as it went round corners? Whatever happened to that?

that is a monster , amazing how far back the driver was from the front on those steam trains , must have had to keep switching sides on bends , what are those 3 big boxes on the side for I wonder ?

Isn't that where the con rods are joined ? don't know just a wild guess .

I might still have a pic I took myself of one of these big American beasts ,, mabe bigger than that one , I sure wouldn't have wanted to be the stoker boy on there !

Those are the pistons

when I was a kid, the Golden Arrow used to whoosh past at the bottom of the garden, on it's way to the coast

beautiful train, lots of posh Pullman cars too

^ when I was a kid, we had the Southern Aurora which used to pass through my town, on its way from Melbourne to Sydney.
