Now after 3 weeks in spice land we are back home to UK / Thai food , complete with diet ( more about that soon } so I thought I would call her bluff tonight ,, I made the nam prik ,, BUT with Scotch Bonnetts ,, Jeeez was the prik hot , but I grinned my way through the pain barrier to watch my lovely little wifes reactions.
Jeez did she ever go red and get sweaty , but she would not concede that easy , she had no idea , but eventually exclaimed WOW ! that chilli is hot !!!
After a period of brow mopping and sighing and exclaiming followed by 20 mins in the hong nam she has returned exclaiming Sap Sap Sap ! Thankyou honey so much for that ,,
Oh well there is always the Naga next week ,, I give up she actually DID enjoy it .

Mrs Ast used to eat chillies like they were a major food group. After living in the west for the last 7 years, she has learned to appreciate that food is interesting and comes in many textures and flavours, and doesn't have to be doused in chillies. She is unable to eat somtam the way she used to now.

She does like her food spicy/hot. While in the states she keeps, chilli, plaa-raa (fermented fish) and garlic in the refrig/freezer.

Funny you should say that SL today I have just taken delivery of a new fridge freezer for Jan to accommodate all her jars of this that and the other from Thai ,, before we had a 50/50 fridge freezer now we have a 75/ 25 in favour of the fridge.
We now have 2 shelves dedicated to either dead or dying or fermenting objects in varying states of decay

I use the single round bulb Chinese garlic and regular small red/green chillis just like Thailand in many dishes.

After eating Thai food for nearly all my life I can eat it as hot as it comes. I love it!

I bought a bottle of this stuff on my last trip to UK. Good stuff, one or two drops more than sufficient. Gave it to the Thais to try, with it "its quite hot" warning. They of course slathered, and paid the price - and its now one of the few things of mine that remain untouched by them.....

I just asked mine, she uses 10 chillies in her Papaya Salad, says she likes Pet. She reckons some people use 12 or 13
She came back with about a quarter of a carrier bag of chillies last week, I asked her if it was for the year, she said No, for this week. After learning the hard way, I know when not to ask for a BJ

my wife happily sits with her friends and eats food that makes me sweat just looking at it

besides the som tam, she loves the various green/brown, distinctly unattractive pastes that you smear your ball of sticky rice in

meanwhile, back in Europe she doesn't mind the lack of that type of food

^ Thats an unusual combo mate ,, I always found the southern curries a tad more edible , are the massaman curries from the south ?

Mabe I'm mistaken but I find them delicious compared to the very hot red and panang curries my misses makes ,, I do enjoy a good somtum but it has to have the right balance of palm sugar in it for me to eat it

I reckon the north south divide comes into play my missus like her food not to spicy.
But a friend of ours eats the chillies,ginger and shallots that the put into little bags as a sort of condiment with your main meal from the food carts.
How you can eat 8/10 of those little Thai chillies is beyond me mind you 30 minutes later she happily announces puad thong and legs it to the toilet.

^^ I'm not really talking about the Massaman, Penang and Yellow Curry types, I'm talking about the hot ones which need loads of carmin to stop your stomach from reaching the fires of hell; I don't eat these types meself - tasteless and too hot, imo.

I do love a nice Massaman, Penang and Yellow Curry though...

My Missus looks in pain when she's eating it, then starts blowing and wafting her hand in front of her mouth. Quite often she will run to the toilet an hour or so later doubled up with stomach cramps, never stops her repeating the feat on a daily basis though

The present GF is not into very spicy food she is moderate, it is still a bit to hot for me though.

But my former GF could not get it spicy enough, to the point of sweating profusely clasping her stomach and with agony induced contortions of her face, and she loved it

I could not understand it, but then again lot's of things with lady's - Thai ones in particular I don't have a 100% handle on

Over the years, I've learned that when I'm whipping up one of my tasty meals for the spouse, I'll spice it up just a little more than normal just to keep it interesting. But in the end, she like it just as spicy as the way I make it and serve it. Aloy Mak!
