Webb Ellis time at rugby-mad schools

no doubt this will invite the usual crap responses about NZ and the World Cup that we have all heard before, so many times . . . but I'll put it here anyway, they took it round schools in my once upon a time hometown yesterday, incl FDMC where I spent six unhappy years. Conrad Smith in the current AB team is an old-boy of the school

PRIZED TROPHY: New Plymouth High School students turned out in force yesterday to catch a glimpse of the Webb Ellis Trophy

Rugby's most sought after trophy made a fleeting visit to Taranaki yesterday much to the delight of rugby fans young and old.

Its first stop was New Plymouth Boys' High School. It also went to Francis Douglas Memorial College and the Highlands and Devon intermediates.

Its minder, Rachel Marchant, said the tour was part of a drive to boost rugby enrolment numbers before the upcoming season.

The cup spent two years with the nation which won it last and was then returned to the International Rugby Board in Dublin, she said.

    ***********

New Plymouth hosts three matches in the 2011 RWC
    Ireland v USA
    Russia v USA
    Wales v Namibia

my brother (Nthrn China) and his son (Edinburgh) heading to NZ in September and will see these matches as based in NP and tickets are cheaper for these ones, also a couple of the top-tier matches in Wellington and Auckland, it's an expensive business.
The Jones boys will be cheering v Namibia!

Surely the IRB should be in London?

^ I'd have lost money on that one

    IRB Organisation
The International Rugby Board (IRB) was founded in 1886. With its headquarters in Dublin, the IRB is the world governing and Law making body for the Game of Rugby Union.

Suprised it isn't in Monte Carlo, usually these sports administrators are only interested in what they can get for themselves.

not rugby . . . but an indication of how popular football has become in New Zealand these days; the 'rugby as religion' image is long-gone.

The Halberg Awards are awarded annually in NZ since 1949, this year's winners are

    2010 HALBERG AWARD WINNERS

2010 Halberg Award: All Whites (football)

Sportsman of the Year: Richie McCaw (rugby)

Sportswoman of the Year: Valerie Adams (athletics)

Sports Team of the Year: All Whites (football)

Coach of the Year: Ricki Herbert (football)

To win the Halberg Award - the first for the code in the awards which date back to 1949 - the All Whites first headed off fellow finalists - the All Blacks, rugby league's Four Nations-winning Kiwis, rowing pair Eric Murray and Hamish Bond, and the Silver Ferns (netball) to win the sports team category.

McCaw is only the third rugby player in the last 20 years, and the first since Jeff Wilson back in 1997 to win Sportsman of the Year.

Well, it'd make it even easier for the 'Best Team in the World' to fix their chances of actually winning the Main Prize, so I understand your thinking on that one.

I saw there is a poll which is absolutely pointless as most will vote with their hearts instead of their brains. The 1 Wales vote is a perfect example.

I however will have to vote for the NZ All Blacks as they have been far and away the best side on the planet over the last few years and deserve to win if they can keep their nerve, retain their present squad on the park and play the impressive Rugby they are capable of.

Feeling a bit better about England's chances as key players are starting to put their stamp on every game now. The England - France game will in reality be the only competition England will have this time round, but to have players like Flood, Ashton & Youngs destroying teams bodes well, especially as three other world class players feature in the squad (of whom two are being well used as impact players in the 6 Nations; Wilko & Thompson, and Moody still to return from injury).

I answer all questions Bob but you have trouble responding.

That's why you revert to highlighting grammer and spelling mistakes and in a futile attempt to cover for your chronic ignorance and arrogance.

You just keep on collecting autographs and bubblegum cards mate.

I don't remember mentioning Wales in my post, but now that you do, England would beat Wales in any stadium on any day of the week and by generally bigger margins than in the opening game of this year's English Grand Slam Championship.

    Happy now?

^^ teams....plural, you've only played 2, therefore you must have been referring to beating Wales. Beating yes, no doubt there....destroying, hardly..... or were you referring to the defeat in your previous game against South Africa?

    Yes, that's the one.

Or, you can go with destroying Wales whilst still in 3rd gear last week. Whatever makes you happy.

I see Giteau has signed to play for Toulon, that means Wilkinson, Henson and Giteau will be in the same backline next year.......

Not a huge loss for the Wannabies these days though....

O'Neill deal means Deans set to stay for 2015 cup

ROBBIE DEANS is expected to be reappointed Wallabies coach before the World Cup in September for at least two more seasons.
The chances of Deans being in charge of the Wallabies for the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia in two year's time and even the 2015 World Cup have been dramatically boosted by John O'Neill accepting a contract extension that will keep him in charge of the Australian Rugby Union until the end of 2013.
O'Neill took the bold step of appointing Deans as the first foreign Wallabies coach after the team's flawed 2007 World Cup campaign. Although Deans has experienced an exasperating three years, including a 10-Test losing streak to the All Blacks, the ARU chief executive has not lost faith in his national coach. Deans, whose four-year contract expires at the end of this year, also has influential ARU board members backing him.
    Advertisement: Story continues below
It seems victories over South Africa in Bloemfontein, All Blacks in Hong Kong and France in Paris last year have taken the pressure off Deans, who has a success rate of 55.8 per cent from 24 wins and a draw in 43 Tests.
Wallabies players have made it known they want Deans to stay on after the World Cup, with one star telling the ARU he would go overseas if Deans left after the tournament.
It is anticipated Deans will be offered a two-year contract extension, with a two-year option, before the World Cup.
