Bellinger returning to Cubs on three-year deal

Outfielder Cody Bellinger and the Cubs agreed on a three-year, $80 million deal on Sunday, according to a report from ESPN's Jeff Passan. Bellinger will reportedly receive opt-outs after each of the first two years of the deal. The deal has not been confirmed by the club.

Last offseason, the question surrounding Bellinger was: Which team will take a chance on the former NL MVP who saw his offensive production fall off a cliff from 2020-22? This time around, it wasn’t a question of whether Bellinger was worth taking a flier on, but just how much he’d earn with his next contract.

The Los Angeles Dodgers reached a new deal with utility man Kiké Hernández on Monday.

Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reported Hernández and the Dodgers agreed to a one-year deal worth $4 million.

ESPN's Jeff Passan previously reported the two sides were nearing a deal.

The move comes after Passan reported the Dodgers traded veteran center fielder Manuel Margot to the Minnesota Twins.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported in December a reunion between Hernández and the Dodgers was possible.

The 32-year-old has spent seven seasons with the Dodgers across two different spells. He closed out the 2023 campaign in Los Angeles, compiling a .262/.308/.423 slash line along with five homers in 54 games.

Cardinals, 3-time All-Star shortstop Crawford agree to 1-year deal

With Tommy Edman’s availability for Opening Day still unclear following offseason right wrist surgery, the Cardinals agreed to a one-year deal with veteran shortstop Brandon Crawford as insurance behind rookie sensation Masyn Winn on Tuesday.

Crawford, 37, previously spent his entire 13-year career with the Giants, where he was a three-time All-Star, a four-time Gold Glover and a Silver Slugger winner in 2015. A career .250 hitter, Crawford batted just .194 with a .273 on-base percentage in 2023 in an injury-marred season in which he played just 93 games.

The shortstop was an All-Star as recently as 2021 when he hit .298 with 24 home runs and 90 RBIs. In addition to winning his fourth Gold Glove that season, Crawford also finished fourth in the voting for the NL MVP Award.

The move comes after middle infielders Tim Anderson (Marlins), Nick Ahmed (Giants), Amed Rosario (Rays), Enrique Hernandez (Dodgers) and Gio Urshela (Tigers) signed elsewhere in recent days.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol admitted on Monday morning that Edman was likely still multiple weeks away from hitting live pitching. Edman, the Cardinals’ projected starter in center field and their desired backup to Winn at shortstop, had surgery in October to repair damage in a right wrist that had bothered him for two seasons.

On Monday, Edman was still hitting off a tee and swinging only at soft toss throws from coaches. Marmol said that the switch-hitting Edman is further along hitting from the left side of the plate than he is right-handed because of the limitations with the wrist. The Cards are hopeful that Edman will progress to where he is hitting off coaches and a pitching machine before stepping in the batter’s box for live BP. Only after he passes those phases will Edman be available for games, Marmol said.

Japanese Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei hit a home run during his first preseason game with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani batted second as the designated hitter against the Chicago White Sox in Glendale, Arizona, on Tuesday.

When his name was announced for his plate appearance in the first inning, the spectators cheered and applauded loudly.

At his third at-bat in the fifth inning, he blasted a full-count, two-run homer off the sixth pitch.

The game was Ohtani's first since September 3 of last year.

The two-way star's right elbow was operated on. He has been practicing as he continues to rehabilitate the elbow.

Ohtani demonstrated his power during his Dodgers spring training debut.

The Dodgers won the game 9-6.

A day after announcing that Shohei Ohtani will make his first Cactus League appearance in a Dodgers uniform on Tuesday, the Dodgers are also ready to show off their other prized offseason acquisition this week.

After throwing a bullpen session on Monday, the Dodgers have Japanese phenom Yoshinobu Yamamoto scheduled to pitch two innings against the Rangers on Wednesday in Surprise, Ariz., and it will be streamed live on MLB.TV at 12:05 p.m. PT. It’ll be the first time Yamamoto gets into Cactus League action in his career.

“It’s great,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “The guys really came into camp excited, very focused. I think the guys that are new have done a great job of assimilating. The guys who have been here have done a great job of incorporating the new players, and now seeing them on the field and to play Dodger baseball, it’s been fun. We play every pitch, we play hard and that’s my expectation.”

On Tuesday, the Dodgers finally got a chance to enjoy the first part of their billion dollar plan as Shohei Ohtani exceeded the hype of his first game with the Dodgers by launching a two-run homer in his last at-bat of the game.

A day later, it was Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s turn to show he’s worth the anticipation and hype that comes with being the most expensive pitcher in the history of the game. Though it was just a Spring Training outing, Yamamoto showed glimpses of exactly why he was one of the most sought after free agents ever.

In his first Cactus League start Wednesday against the Rangers, the Japanese phenom tossed two scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit. Yamamoto threw 19 pitches, 16 for strikes, displaying his wide arsenal of pitches.

Yamamoto’s first opponent was All-Star infielder Marcus Semien. The right-hander started Semien with a 95 mph fastball that was fouled back. His next pitch was a wicked 79 mph curveball that had Semien out in front, barely fouling it off. Yamamoto ultimately won the battle with a 96 mph fastball in the top of the zone, striking him out swinging.

Two pitches later, Yamamoto gave up a hard-hit single to rising star Evan Carter. That was quickly erased, however, as he threw three consecutive 96 mph fastballs to Wyatt Langford, the last of which was rolled over to Max Muncy at third to start an inning-ending double play. Yamamoto needed only 11 pitches to get through the first frame, throwing just two balls out of the zone.

Yamamoto saved his best for last. In the second inning, he started 2022 American League Silver Slugger Award winner Nathaniel Lowe with a 94 mph heater. The next pitch was a 74 mph looping curveball that Lowe watched land in the zone. Yamamoto then finished Lowe off with his signature splitter, which got an ugly swing.

After getting Jonah Heim to fly out on the first pitch of the at-bat, it was Leody Taveras’ turn to get the Yamamoto experience. Taveras fouled off a pair of heaters before also going down swinging on a 91 mph splitter.

In total, Yamamoto threw 11 four-seam fastballs and was clocked between 94-96 mph. He threw three curveballs, all of which went for strikes. Yamamoto also threw the splitter and cutter, showing why he won the Eiji Sawamura Award three consecutive years in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league.

As Yamamoto walked off the mound in the second, he was greeted by a standing ovation from the Dodgers fans in attendance. He was also welcomed with a lot of smiles inside the dugout, particularly from Ohtani, who wasn’t in the lineup but still made the trip to watch Yamamoto make his first appearance in the United States as a Major Leaguer.

Like Ohtani, Yamamoto will get a lot of attention this season. After getting a 12-year, $325 million deal this offseason despite never throwing a pitch in the Majors, there was naturally some skepticism. But he passed his first test with flying colors, something the Dodgers are banking on him doing more often than not.
