Thread: Cycling - in Thailand

Chanthaburi bike shop Zienbike has been running a series of events for kids and parents over 3km loop alongside the canal east of the city; think the upper age is ten, down to pre-school - idea is for a parent to either cycle or walk/jog with their child.
Good scheme, though 3km too much for some, seen pics of a parent carrying child and pushing the bike

We still have the bike i used to take D2 to school on until about age 6 at which time I think i became too embarrassing to be seen with (the episode where I wore a Santa hat lives on) and I'd accompany her on another bike. 18 now, and she's still biking regularly on a mountainbike I once thought was mine.

Indirectly connected to cycling in Thailand .... just got an email from GCN+ saying that they are closing their app and race broadcasting service next month. Apparently their new owners ( Warner Bros-Discovery) who also own Eurosport want everybody to watch Discovery+ ....seems the owners don't know that much of the world cannot (legally) get their channel, including anybody in Thailand. So no more TdF, Giro, Vuelta or any of the classics to watch next year. Nor any of their adventure films. Guess I might have to go out and ride my own bike instead of watching the pros.

This morning I biked to the beach at Chao Lao, about halfway there was a police checkpoint at Khamong; same place as on Sunday about 150m past an intersection, that day watched a number of vehicles making a late right-turn, adding about 7km to the beach journey but avoiding the checkpoint.

I was stopped, asked where I was going and waved on 'ok'.
He was noting something on his clipboard - maybe a section for him to complete: 'assisted a lost foreigner and gave clear directions to his destination'.
They'd gone when i came back - disappointed as I wanted a chilled water bottle refill.

That cool weather didn’t last long. I put my windbreaker up a few days ago.

I couldn’t ask for better morning weather for the bike rides now.

The bike shop that assembled them, Zienbike, can't take any repair/maintenance bookings this week as all staff busy assembling bikes for Saturday, and they can't take any more orders - sold out.
My bike 7000km service can wait another week.

That's lovely, I thought. Presuming they are being given to orphans, children in low income families etc.


Is that the case, or is there going be something like a massive raffle show sponsored by M-150 and Weed Cafe, where they're given out to kids that buy a bottle or a joint?

That's a yes.

MrsP's company is also gifting kids bikes to an organisation which will distribute them, and Zienbike were taking donations towards buying bikes if individuals didn't/couldn't cash up for the total price.

This morning's ride, 39km and a swim - surf's up in Chanthaburi!



On the way there I was passed by two minivans on the coast highway, few km further they'd stopped, support vehicles for maybe a dozen touring cyclists who were taking their early lunch break in a rest area. Pre-covid there were numerous, regular 'package tour' groups like this, but since then had't seen any until today.

Same beach on Monday 8th - minus any breeze/waves. All sand, have to travel a few km further up the coast for snorkeling with easily accessible reefs.

Saturday - uneventful not even a dog to chase me, cycle lane along the highway, dry and dusty 34C, had a 3km diversion to a shrine dedicated to King Taksin on the coast, gather that he / or some of his ships, stopped here 1767

Having three days off cycling - 1012km for February in between some house painting and a couple of running events

Yesterday watching longtail boat racing in the sun then off to Dune 2, while an hour up the coast at Rayong their 'fun ride' turned a little damp

Three boys in 7-11, with the usual questions
Hello where are you from? "Chanthaburi"
No where are you from? "Iceland"
What is your name? "Mister Green"
How old are you? "One hundred"
No reaction to the last one, maybe I did look that age after 2hrs in the sun

Then a Highway Patrol car stopped - I was prepared to give the same answers but he was only interested in my bike, how far I'd pedalled, where I was going to next, and whether I liked living in Chanthaburi.
He can't have received the memo about checking this potential rogue overstayer farang's ID, visa status etc.
Well-behaved, I didn't even consider taking his pistol off him, kicking him in the back, or throwing a glass at him.
