Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter has accepted an invitation from Russia leader Vladimir Putin to attend next year's World Cup.
Blatter's 17-year spell in charge of world football's governing body ended amid a corruption scandal in 2015.
Fifa subsequently banned Blatter from the sport for eight years, a term later reduced to six years after appeal.
"I will go to the World Cup in Russia," said Blatter, 81. "I received an invitation from President Putin."
Russia was awarded the right to stage the 2018 tournament in 2010, on the same day Qatar was controversially selected to host the 2022 event.
Both countries were cleared of corruption allegations in the Garcia Report, published in 2014.
But in September 2015, Swiss authorities announced Blatter was under investigation for a £1.3m "disloyal payment" to ex-Uefa boss Michel Platini in 2011. Both men denied any wrongdoing.
He successfully appealed against an eight-year ban issued by Fifa's ethics committee to reduce the term to six years. A further attempt to appeal against the ban through the Court of Arbitration for Sport was unsuccessful.
The World Cup begins on 14 June, the first edition of the tournament in Europe since 2006.

With the 2018 World Cup fast approaching, the competing teams are starting to release their kits for the tournament.
So far, only eight Adidas kits have been released from the 23 confirmed teams, with each jersey taking 'inspiration from iconic past shirts'.
Here, we take a look at the kits...

Argentina

Lionel Messi wears Argentina's World Cup home shirt

While Argentina's new home kit will feature the iconic blue and white stripes, it will also commemorate the AFA's 125 year anniversary. It will subtly incorporating laurels - a key element of the Argentinian coat of arms - and the AFA crest into the stripes.

Angel Di Maria wears Argentina's World Cup home shirt

The jersey also features an embossed sign-off combined of laurels and the number 125, plus two gold stars above the badge in celebration of the country's two World Cup wins.
Germany

Mesut Ozil wears Germany's World Cup home shirt

The current World Cup holders pay homage to their Italia '90 victory with their new shirt for the 2018 edition of the tournament, which builds on this classic design and features dropped shoulder cut lines.

Mats Hummels wears Germany's World Cup home shirt

It will have the words 'Die Mannschaft' on the reverse of the neck and a gold World Cup winner badge features on the front as well as a special sign-off on the inside of the collar pays homage to the link between the two eras.

Modelled on one of Spain's most famous shirts, their 2018 home jersey will be based on the kit worn at the 1994 World Cup in the USA.
It features a dynamic line graphic design consisting of diamonds in red, yellow and blue that represent the speed, energy and style of football that's become so associated with the Spain national team.

The 2018 hosts will wear a shirt inspired by their gold at 1988 Olympic Games, with the red jersey featuring solid white lines running from the the back across the arms and onto the chest.
On the back of the neck, there will be a Russian flag, the Russian eagle and wording that translates to 'Victory-Bound as One'. They will be hoping it can inspire a home victory at the World Cup next summer.
Belgium

Michy Batshuyai wears Belgium's World Cup home shirt

The Belgians will be taking their inspiration from Euro '84 for their World Cup kit with the shirt an overall colour of red which ties in with their nickname of the 'Red Devils'.
The country's crest will feature in the middle of the shirt - among a pattern of diamonds across the chest - with the Adidas logo on the right.
Colombia

Colombia's World Cup home shirt

Another Italia '90 throwback, the new Colombia kit features a blue and red graphic design on the side of the shirt highlighting the Colombian flag colours whilst reinterpreting the previous design.
The shirt also features a sign-off on the back of the neck which which translates to 'United as one Nation'.

Mexico also take their inspiration from the early 1990s, and stays true to their traditional green shirt with a graphic running from the hem towards the chest.
The detail to the neck reads 'Soy Mexico', which completes the visual commitment to the country.

Japan's World Cup home shirt

The home jersey for Japan takes inspiration from handcrafted Japanese apparel design and mimics the traditional craftsmanship of Sashiko stitching technique, which is made by white rough threads on an indigo base.
The kit features a new shade of blue with hues of red and white in representation of the national flag.

A knockout stage exit to Wales at Euro 2016 showed promise and a place at consecutive tournaments for the first time in the squad's history is now in sight.

Australia v Honduras: Socceroos set up World Cup qualification chance with 0-0 away leg draw

The Socceroos have set themselves up for World Cup qualification with a scrappy 0-0 draw in Honduras.
On a poor pitch and against a nervous opponent, Australia might have managed to take more from the game with better finishing,
but will now travel back to Sydney confident it can negotiate the home tie and reach Russia 2018.

After a shaky start that saw Honduras take the early ascendancy, the Socceroos settled and begun to control the match — or
as best they could, considering the horrible pitch conditions.

The Socceroos have played on some poor pitches throughout this qualification campaign — some of them at home — but none
have come close to what they experienced at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

It made for a scrappy game that often lacked tempo, but when the chances came, they usually came to those in green and gold.

The referee seemed to have given a penalty to Australia after the Honduran goalkeeper took out Bailey Wright, who was going up for a header.

But after a lengthy consultation with the linesman, and many protests from the Honduras players, (the decision was reversed and) the final decision
was somehow offside — no Australian player was even close to being off.

Martin O'Neill says his Republic of Ireland side have it "all to play for" in Dublin on Tuesday after they claimed a goalless draw in the first leg of the World Cup play-off with Denmark.
O'Neill's side had just 28% of possession in Copenhagen but were well-organised and disciplined as they frustrated the home side.
Denmark had chances but a combination of their poor finishing and impressive saves from Darren Randolph ensured O'Neill's side will start the second leg on level terms.
The visitors' only clear opportunity saw Kasper Schmeichel save Cyrus Christie's attempted chip before Jeff Hendrick's follow-up was blocked.
"It was a tough evening and the players did splendidly," said O'Neill. "We've come out the other side and it's all to play for. We'll have to win a game and we might have to score a couple because Denmark are capable of scoring.
"They had one really great chance. Overall we restricted them. An away goal would have been great but we didn't carve out that many chances. We need to be more creative [in Dublin]. We're still in the tie."
The Republic of Ireland are aiming to make their first appearance at a World Cup finals since Japan and Korea in 2002, when Mick McCarthy's side reached the last 16.

Oliver Norwood admits he feels ‘shafted’ at missing out on a place in the World Cup after Northern Ireland fell to an 1-0 aggregate defeat to Switzerland.

Michael O’Neill’s men missed out on their first World Cup appearance since 1986, but put in a spirited performance in Basel in a scoreless second leg on Sunday night.

A highly-disputed penalty from Ricardo Rodriguez in Belfast was the difference between the sides, which left Norwood frustrated.

“Shafted is the only word to put it,” Norwood said.

“I will think about the penalty decision for years to come as it’s the only goal between the two sides and it’s knocked us out.
“It’s not just the penalty decision as the tackle Fabian Schar made on Stuart Dallas in Belfast was a red card.
“He then decides to go in for a two-footed tackle and the referee didn’t even blow for a foul, which was astonishing.
“The referee has a hard job keeping up with the quickness of the game, but you can’t deem those two tackles as not being red cards in the modern game.

“The player has lunged in from 10 yards in both games.”
Northern Ireland failed to register a single shot on target in the first leg at Windsor Park, but Norwood hopes their performance in Basel has left people ‘proud’ back home.
“We were angered, upset and disappointed with what happened in Belfast,” Norwood added.
“We can stand here and complain all night, but I hope we put in a performance that everyone in Northern Ireland is proud of.

“We left everything out there and it just wasn’t to be.
“I don’t think their players enjoyed facing us and we got amongst them.
“We spoke about making Northern Ireland proud and I think we did that.
“We are devastated as a squad, but I hope we stick together.”
Question marks will loom over the international futures of Gareth McAuley, Chris Brunt and Aaron Hughes - as well as manager Michael O’Neill. However, Norwood hopes the spirited performance in Basel will convince all four to remain on board.

“Hopefully, all the players will remain available for one more campaign,” Norwood revealed. “Obviously, we all want Michael to stay.
“We hope that our performance tonight would want him to remain in charge.
“The message is loud and clear from the players and fans that we would like Michael to stay as we can achieve great things with this squad.
“We have some good young players coming through and we have players with a lot of experience as well.”

Yeah, I don't get this Irish whingeing. Switzerland were all over them in the first leg and should have scored more. The better team are in the finals.

The Italy v Sweden game is one to watch. 1-0 down, on the verge of not appearing in a WC finals for the first time in 59 years and the Italian press with their knives out?

Put a tenner today on Italy as winners next year.

It's hard to disagree. As much a the UK media are raving about our "young" first team's ability to stand up to Germany on Friday, that was pretty much their 2nd or 3rd team.

Hope springs eternal though with our recent successes at younger levels.
