I would love to watch him fight.

I have never seen such a passive mug on a fighter before or after a fight before.

He so doesn't look like the idea one has of an athlete.

can you tell Louis I am sorry, few too many beers last night.
I'll behave if he gives me back my rep points.

    Currently downloading the Fedor collection.

every one of his 28 fights, 4.2 gigs from full contact zone.
    guaranteed to hurt my ratio.

Managing your ratio there is a real ballsache.

I've had to limit my d/l rate to 10 kb/s on a huge torrent just to make sure i don't get screwd.
fortunately Ultimate fighter 6 episode 2 is uploading twice as quick as the download.

can you explain the upload bonus?

I have a 9.2 point bonus, but it says i should have 75 points for upping a gig.
i have upped nearly 3 gigs so far.

what is that exchange your points thing about?

    Mike Tyson would cry "Ow!"

Might stand a chance? Are we talking about the same Mike Tyson?

Despite how hard or skilled these fighters are Mike would only have to hit the guy once, never mind study anything. All this choking, smashing & slamming just wouldn't come into it. The whole thing would be over in ten seconds.
There still seems to be some confusion in some poster’s minds about how they think boxers would ‘stack up’ against MMA fighters. His remark that Tyson would have beaten any MMA fighter is hard to believe for anyone who has followed MMA and watched every boxer who was only a boxer who enter an MMA ring get his ass kicked by fighters who were versed in all aspects of fighting: wrestling, muay thai, jiu jitsu, boxing.

Saying Mike Tyson would dominate MMA—without extensive further training—because Tyson knows how to hit hard is like saying Michael Jordan who knows how to play with a basketball can also be a great baseball player. After all, they are all balls they are playing with, right? So if you can be a great player with one kind of ball you can be a great player with another kind of ball, right? If you can ‘hit hard’ (Tyson’s supposed advantage) then you could not only win at boxing but also in MMA. Wrong, of course. Similarly, if an MMA fighter were to step into a Boxing ring, under boxing rules, with Tyson, Tyson would kill him.

The great boxer I mentioned in a previous post who went to Japan to fight in an MMA bout was Trevor Berbick, who was heavyweight champion until Tyson beat him. (If anyone finds a youtube, torrent, etc clip of this, please advise. The clip needs to be called “Boxing vs. MMA”). Berbick literally ran out of the ring and escaped, running, down the aisle, after only 10 or 20 seconds when Takada kicked him in the legs a handful of times. The great boxer couldn’t even get close enough to Takada to hit him with his lethal fists/gloves—all because he was being kicked in the legs, outside his punching range—with the force of an 80 mph baseball bat. Tyson in his prime would get kicked in His legs just as hard and would cry “Ow!” the way he did in one fight when the cut man was working on him.

Even without being kicked, in the first clinch Tyson would find himself being thrown to the canvas, then on his back, mounted, helpless, and either pounded out or submitted. Tyson would have zero experience or training to deal with being taken to the ground. He would be helpless! I venture to say that most elite college wrestlers could beat Tyson in an MMA match, simply because they could take Tyson down before Tyson could blink. (And, yes, if it were a boxing match Tyson would knock them out with one punch.) There have been many athletes bigger and stronger than Tyson, who lost MMA fights on their backs, just as Tyson would—that is, if he didn’t run out of the ring and auditorium the way Berbick did.

If you want to see graphic demonstrations of this you can watch early UFC fights, say UFC 1-20, where boxers still thought of themselves great fighters (as opposed to great boxers) and naively accepted MMA fights. All kinds of tough guy boxers tried their hand in the UFC in the early days and ended up in the hospital--from U.S. Army Special Forces and Marine Corp instructors in hand-to-hand combat to Russian and European boxing champions. And did I mention Trevor Berbick, who was the U.S. heavyweight boxing champion immediately before Tyson? They all went down hard in the MMA ring.

Anyway, all of the above is why you will not see any pure boxers enter an MMA ring anymore: they’ve learned their lesson the hard way.

^ Absolutely excellent analysis of boxing vs. MMA. You're very right on all points. However, with Tyson, in his prime, and a little coaching about avoiding the range and instruction on short kicks might be able to get in a deliver a KO strike. Agree if he gets taken to the mat he'd be finished.

If you go back to early UFC and watch Royce, he didn't care how big or how bad the strikers or anyone else was. Under those rules, he just took them all to the mat and finished them, even if he was upside down and choked them out with his big toes.

People are forgetting Mike would not be restricted to boxing moves in a UFC fight.

He was a street brawler - in one of the hardest places on earth - before he was a boxer & knocking out groups of prison officers at a time when he was just fourteen years old. The man is an animal & would murder any of these guys.

Most of this lot would get knocked out in my local boozer, never mind by Iron-Mike Tyson.

^the only interesting thing about it was a crap decision.

76 is better, well, I think there was 1 or 2 good fights.

Seems to be too much technique coming in with these new fighters... what it needs is brawlers a la Forest.

LOL!! Tyson is a washed up loser now...he does occasionally go along to MMA press conferences/fights and sits there in awe of the stuff he sees. Even if he was back in his prime he would either be put on his back and choked out within the first round by a jujitsu guy or get his legs taken out by a kickboxer.

MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world. Maybe when blowhards like mr toughman above grow to understand the full complexity of it they will appreciate it more.

what they really need is big characters coming in from overseas. That is one thing Pride FC did very well. Their tournaments were amazing spectacles and you were always guaranteed a good mix of fighters and fighting styles. We don't really need everyone to adopt the sprawl and brawl 'cos then it isn't going to be much different to a Muay Thai match. The beauty of MMA is the unpredictability of it all....one guy can be blasting away at another guy for 2 rounds, make one mistake, get taken down and submitted (like cro-cop vs. norieuga). That's good to see!!!

^ I agree. I'm really saddened to see only an octagon format now with Pride gone. The "trapped against the cage" format gets really old.

They should be back to ring format and allow soccer head kicks, etc..

the cage is here to stay i'm afraid. UFC may bring in a different scoring system but that is all they will change imo

K1 Heros is still a ring format but they haven't been making waves so far. I hope the Japs get their act together and bring in a new MMA organisation to rival the UFC

^ very sad indeed. The Axe Murderer was the best at those stomps. I think a lot of the reason the UFC has developed the way it has is because of the violence aspect and it is mainstream now, more or less replacing boxing as a sport....

mainstream in europe and america at last....only took 20 years huh?

the Japs have their priorities in order..Pride shows were filled with 80,000 people regularly from the first few shows onwards. Now when the UFC gets 20,000 they have a shit-attack

Who is now the UFC heavy weight champion? Last one I saw it was Randy Couture who reclaimed the title at age 41.

Who did he fight in the title bout? The Iceman again?
How's Tito Ortiz doing? Randy Couture humiliated him by spanking his bum the last fight I saw.
