Well the event I watched today had the Irishman almost knocked out with a few punches from Khabib without any grappling.

What more do I need to understand?

Khabib is not a puncher, yes he hit Conor hard but his game plan every fight is to get you to the ground and pound you. Take a look at his previous fights..
