David Beckham to retire from football at end of season

Former England captain David Beckham is to retire at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old signed a five-month deal at Paris St-Germain in January and donated all of his salary to charity.
Beckham made 115 appearances for England and 394 for Manchester United, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
"I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level," he said.

“He's been a fantastic ambassador for football and sport. What he has achieved has been remarkable. Whatever he goes on to do I'm sure he will achieve a lot.”

Including PSG's recent Ligue 1 title win, Beckham has won 19 trophies - 10 of them league titles - in a playing career spanning 20 years, and is the only English player to win championships in four countries.

"If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over 100 times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy," he said.

"I'm fortunate to have realised those dreams."

Beckham moved to Real Madrid in 2003, winning La Liga with them in 2007 before a switch to the United States with LA Galaxy.

The midfielder made his England debut against Moldova in 1996 and captained the side from 2000 to 2006, making his 115th and final England appearance in a 3-0 win over Belarus in 2009.

He added: "Nothing will ever completely replace playing the game I love. However, I feel like I'm starting a new adventure and I'm genuinely excited about what lies ahead.

"I'm fortunate to have been given many opportunities throughout my career and now I feel it's my time to give back."

He has two more games to go before the end of the season, concluding on 26 May at Lorient.

Maybe he'll be snatched by the FA to escort schoolchildren/foreign visitors around Wembley and possibly star in a silent Hollywood movie or two.

On second thoughts he'll still probably do as he is told by Posh!

No mate, bigger and better things than that I reckon. He's good people IMO, and he's done a huge amount of stuff for football already, children's academies and the like.

He also put a lot of effort in to the Olympic bid, which was huge for the UK. He'll be doing some major things in the background I reckon, perhaps involved in the England national set up.

Good luck to him, he's been good for the game and good for England IMO.

He has a real passion and dedication and brought to the game the qualities that make football such an exciting sport to watch. He's a legend and a fantastic role model.

I don't think we know the half of what goes on mate. Most people at his level don't fart unless there's big bucks involved. Lots of people as famous as him, wouldn't spend days out of their lives with no personal reward IMO.

Don't forget, flying around the world on expenses may seem cool to us, but it's nothing out the ordinary to him. It's a chore that takes him away from his family that he doesn't have to do. That's how I see it anyhow.

Off the pitch too he has done much to promote the game in the UK and abroad and not always to line his own pocket, he has an academy in the UK that he's very involved in as I recall.

LA Galaxy???? Are you fucking real? Hardly a top football team, are they now? PSG? He played 9 times for them as a sub.He happened to be in a very good Man Utd team and that is where he got most of his trophies but he was not the best player in that team either.He played for Real Madrid 116 times but could only score 13 goals, he had much better players around him in that team including Zidane.
