It's everything you need in a television programme - Cooking tips, challenges and American people getting monstered by Ramsey.

how long should these torrent downloads take?

I have everything in place, but they take 12 hours or more, then something called 'seeding' takes hours more.. I've given up.

Is it a server issue, that true is blocking me or something?

Seeders are people who are uploading to you. Leechers are people downloading from seeders.

The more seeders, the quicker the download, so if there are multiple torrents available, go for the one with the most seeders.

When you've finished downloading, you are then only "seeding", (which you are doing anyway, to an extent, while downloading), so as a gesture to those kind enough to put stuff up, it's generally accepted protocol to seed for an hour or so, after which you can just stop.

Failing that, and depending what you use to download torrents, set your upload to a reasonably slow rate and seed for longer.

All depends if your bandwidth is capped or unlimited.

True have their own speedtest Betty.

    True Internet Speed Test

Saying that. I don't trust the sods (True as a whole) with their figures and normally use the same as Sabii's to get my results.

With seeding, I always go by ratio. I try to hit 1:1, but if there are no leechers about after a day or so I delete it from utorrent.

^ I just thought I'd download a movie to watch...

My program on the Ubuntu system is called Transmission torrent.

I went to pirate bay, it seemed to work, but very slow... after the film had downloaded it didn't let me play it anyways (but maybe I didn't understand the program properly)...

True is fuked today, so I don't think I don't think I'll be able to download tonight. It's cutting off every few minutes; networkwide proplem so they say...

Is there a very quick and easy way I can try first to check that I'm doing it right (as the vicar said to the actress...)?

    Update.

It did work after all; just looked in my downloads folder - Gothika and Inception are both there.

I'm now downloading a Pearl Jam album as a test; says 15 minutes.

    I just downloaded Vitology - 47 minutes.

As suggested above, I'll leave it to seed for a while.

Good karma to do that .
I use uTorrent , they have the free app- uMap .
I like to see the different countries /towns that the people live in , that are sending me the book etc ,
and then if I'm around, the locations I'm seeding it to .
Guess that small things please small minds ..........

I tend to just download books and music
and have been streaming the tv shows and films, and watching them as they come in, as I thought this way used a lot less data
, but now I'm not too sure
    anyone know ?

It's generally encouraged to seed at least a 1:1 ratio. You're getting all this stuff for nothing, the least you can do is return the favour.

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but I'm new to the world of torrents. What does "seeding" mean, what is my computer actually doing when its seeding?

Install VLC - it will play most video files.

I agree. Use media player classic with k-lite codec pack myself, but, VLC comes with everything in the first place, easy.

Once you've downloaded a file (and also during DL) you can let the file seed (not delete) for a while so others can download off you. It means you are seeding/sharing it.

Personally I burn the stuff that I want to keep to dvd. I sometimes like to re-watch a movie or a tv show at a later date and it's good to know it's there for whenever I want it.
Having unlimited downloads here enables me to download tons of stuff and build up a collection which I'll watch whenever I have time/feel like it.
