It's a shame though because the premise was quite good - satirical look at the Afghanistan war and Gen. McChrystal.

Might've been right up your street Davis if it weren't so 'meh' (the film that is, not your street! ).

Am reminded now though, there's a cameo by Russell Crowe playing someone you know.

Great bonding movie. The dog is the hero, as always. A tear or to at the end is acceptable, man or woman.
Watched that last night. Was okay / interesting until the piss poor CGi Cougar got in the plane to attack (the other Cougar; Kate Winslett). It was so obvious and poorly-done, it really spoiled the film.
At least the dog in the movie seemed to be enjoying itself.

    Dunkirk

From what I've seen from a few other posters already this is apparently a minority opinion but...

Fucking superb! Easily the best film I have seen this year, and in fact I'm struggling to remember the last time I saw any film that had me so engrossed period. No hyperbole or exaggeration at all. I'd read somewhere about the minimal dialogue / exposition and was a little leery of that going in but it just works so well with this film.

Amazed. Truly. Paint drying would have been far more interesting.

I can see how/why you wouldn't have liked it, not really a traditional war movie in a lot of ways.

But yeah I honestly loved it. Don't really know how to explain it - it wasn't edge of the seat stuff but had me tense all the way through.

Edit: one criticism though... why Harry Styles, that was quite jarring and off-putting. He's not the worst actor ever but just his presence took me out of the film a bit. Would've been better off with an unknown.

    The Holly Kane Experiment (2017).

An exercise in how to waste money making a shit film - the British way.

    Battle of the Sexes (2017).
Review the last film you watched-bospd2ttx8sckhfa8h1cuc2ru5zlpm-jpg
Engaging story of the 1973 tennis challenge between the womens #1 player at the time, Billie Jean King, and chauvinist "showman" Bobby Riggs.

Relating the story of how the women sports stars at the time were paid only a fraction of their male counterparts, despite selling equal amounts of tickets, King led a boycott of some of the women's tournaments followed by the players (mostly).
Emma Stone does a great job of playing Billie Jean. Demonized as being a "hairy feminist" at the time, she did have a great sense of humour and personality; never bearing any animosity towards her antagonist (asshole) Bobby Riggs, who baited her into the challenge match to try show how women were inferior (and raise his own profile, obviously).

Good film, and gets even higher marks from me for some torrid lesbian-action scenes. 9/10

    Some Freaks (2016)
About some American high school kids that aren't in the cool kids clique.
The guy has one eye and the girl is very fat.
    She changes. He freaks out.
    Semi European style ending.
Rate this one 8 out of 10.

The Other Side of Hope 2017

Absurd low burner humor from Finland touching on the European migrant crisis but not in a preachy way.
Director has a very quirky style.
The sushi restaurant scene is a comedic classic.
I loved it but many probably won't.
    9 out of 10.

Bet you haven't heard of this one.

    Unterwegs
    German, 2004
Nothing on IMDB about this one but this, and it's spot on:

Jan Krüger: Unterwegs (On the Road, D 2004)

If I start to watch a movie and it doesn't click, I just stop.
This movie surprised me by holding my interest enough to watch it.
Objectively there really wan't much to do that.
I think it was the characters being so mysterious.
They did things that didn't make any sense because the movie never explained their motivations.
    And I do mean never.
    Rating ?? of ??

I put "Bright" on, on netflix... fell asleep early on
I put "Spiderman: Homecoming" on on Amazon... fell asleep later on
I put "Valerian and the zzzz... " fell asleep, but woke up near the end
I put "Good Will Hunting" on (one of the many films I've not seen over the years), and managed to stay awake almost to the very last minute.
I watched "Blood Diamond" a couple of weeks ago - another apparently famous one I've never seen - and that kept me going pretty much to the end.

A lot of films I just can't be arsed watching if they don't grab me in the first 5 or 10 minutes. There's some kind of rating system in there somewhere. =P

Pitt put in a brilliant show, bloody top actor that little flogger is.

Huge production, lots of blow em up, sword fights and war boats invading shit.

Wooden horse with soldiers hiding inside .

    The Founding of an Army.

    Mao's rise and political fighting.

It looks like an "officially approved" work.

    Good production and English subtitles.

    The truth, who knows.

    The Red Maple Leaf (2017).
Review the last film you watched-red-maple-film-jpg
Stellar cast (James Caan, Mira Sorvino, Kris Kristofferson..) in a detective film directed by and starring Frank D'Angelo as the main lead.

Simple but very good film about a cop who loses his family in a tragic accident. Before sinking into a drink-fuelled depression he gets a reprieve to head a team leading an investigation into the abduction of a top Diplomat's daughter. Watch out for a great performance by Martin Landau as the ex-driver for the Diplomat's family.
Great writing, dialogue and acting from a superb cast. Not lots of action, but a film like this doesn't need it, imo.
Really enjoyed this one. Top marks from me.

A 7-year-old me never imagined I would be saying such a thing... I went and saw Star Wars 8 with the kids in 2018... <-sounds so futuristic if you can astrally project yourself back to the mid 1980s... it was pretty good... Disney have certainly rescued the brand. There were plenty of not-too-in-your-face references to Empire Strikes Back; the fight scenes were a lot better (more exciting) than ones in previous films; there were some good surprises; a couple of miscast actors and actresses (Laura Dern?! Not so keen on Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver either). One criticism is that it seems to be very much pushing a diversity thing to the point where there are pointless and unnecessary characters and events, such as Kelly-Marie Tran and Boyega... sort of like a surrogate C-3PO and R2-D2, but without the prescence or charisma - the Boyega character just about gets away with it because of the idea of a defecting stormtrooper, but this seems like a massive continuity issue when all the Stormtroopers were supposed to be clones of Boba Fett's dad, Temuera Morrison. & Snoke died too easily.
