Star Wars - The Force Awakens

    WARNING: This review contains spoilers

I enjoyed Episode VII. It seems to be partly a homage to the first series which is fun for the folk who were only 8 when A New Hope came out in 1977

I did not know anything about this movie going in so Han Solo's appearance with Chewbacca after half an hour or so was a great fun.

Princess Leia (I mean General Leia) has not aged so well. I don't think I want to see her in that gold bikini again. Her voice sounds like Carrie Fisher has been drinking whisky and smoking camels for the last 35 years.

C3P0 and R2 also make cameos.

The whole thing was fun with new protagonists and antagonists carrying the torches for the The Force and The Dark Side respectively.

Even the battle between Solo and his Vader-lite son reprises the events of episode VI.

Good to see the Millennium Falcon in serviceable condition. The frequent references to series 1 were woven in effectively I thought. Mark Hamill even takes a quick bow near the end.

I am not sure about girls being allowed to use the force but lets see how it pans out in episodes VIII and IX

    I can give this a solid 8/10

8 my arse it was a load of shit.

    (see above).

A wankfest for CGI lovers but the script was written on a fag packet.

I did not really notice any spectacular CGI. It was good, sure, but what isn't these days.

It seemed to me that it was more about re-establishing a narrative continuity while there was still the opportunity to involve the characters from the end of series 1 (VI-VI) before they go into residential care

Anyway I thought it was more in keeping with the feel of series 1 in terms of the character style.

I also enjoyed the reprise of the Cantina scene from Mos Eisley. George Lucas's very own Thermae coffee shop.

What script (?), can't say I noticed one - this has as much original script as the last few years of superhero movies. You're missing the point 'Arry.

Actually, don't get carried away..., I'd give it 7.5/10, but by your terrible standards of marking that was a decent call.

"Deadpool". Supposedly an "X"-rated Marvel comics actioner for adults (or at least spotty adolescents) I wasn't expecting much.
The action is indeed violent, graphic, sexy and littered with black humour. But overall quite original and a refreshing change from those bloodless CGI-overloaded kid's films where even the evil super-villains speak like Mormom schoolgirls.
If you like stuff like "Watchmen" or other dark-cartoon stuff, this will be up your strasse. The main character Deadpool, an experiment gone wrong with accelerated healing powers is played very well by Ryan Reynolds, completely insane, but charming and funny at the same time.
Hope the trend for more of these R-rated action films continue. I'd give it a solid 8.5 / 10 points.

I watched Deadpool yesterday - it's ok, too much up its own arse, but a solid 6.5, imho. Star Wars was much better to my, very limited, mind...

I really don't enjoy watching Hollywood masturbating in my face, and that's what Deadpool was.

I very nearly did the same thing. Glad I stayed the course. 7.5 from me.

    Batman VS Superman.. (2/10).

Utter crap.. (and I'm a huge Superman fan - since Christopher reeve's original)

It was a mess, like 10 stories mashed into a shitbox.. way too many elements - disjointed.. just a mess..

The dork that played Lex Luthor was pitifully weak and unbelievable as a villain..

shit shit shit movie... can't be arsed to write more,, losing the will to live just thinking about it...

    sucked ass...

*Christopher Reeve will always be the ultimate Superman

"The Sand Pebbles". 1966. Steve McQueen as a 'China sailor' on a US Navy gunboat patrolling China's waterways in the mid-1920's. One of my favorite McQueen roles other than in the Great Escape. 8/10.

Watched 'The Dark Horse' last night, a NZ film about a (real life) chess champ battling mental-illness. Stars Cliff Curtis who is the dude from that new Walking Dead spin-off show.

I'd heard of it before but it came on my radar again after reading a new article about it. Apparently it is receiving rave reviews in the US after a limited theatrical release (also has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Pretty good film I thought, sort of a 'Once Were Warriors' meets 'Gran Torino' (or any other movie where an older man with issues of his own mentors a troubled kid).

Just a couple of random thoughts: I think any non-Kiwis watching it will probably need subtitles to understand the accents and slang in it; also in general whilst I did enjoy the film I'm kinda going off dramas in general lately - just kinda feel there's enough real world shite going on that I don't need to see it on the screen, I'd rather just be amused and entertained.

    Speaking of which...

    Absolutely loved that!!

After the abortion of a treatment that was Deadpool in the Wolverine: Origins film - the 'Merc With A Mouth'... Without a mouth?? What the actual fuck was that all about! - it was good to see it done right.

I thought they handled all the fourth wall stuff brilliantly and I was curious about how they would do that (for those that may not know that's one of the defining traits from the comic).

I give it a 9.89/10 but I'm a Deadpool fanboy from way back though so my view is highly prejudiced.

well watched it and it's like once we were warriors- low life Maori drunks making each others lives a misery. I would have thought the PC brigade would have accused this sort of portrayal as stereotyping, maybe it's just true to life then? The idea that one of them could actually play chess to a high standard is a bit far fetched though. Over all another depressing portrayal of NZ natives. Are there any films of them chucking spears instead of beer bottles set in the days before whitey arrived to blame everything on?
