Watched Planet of the Apes. About a four; would have been lower except for the riot at the end. Ms. Pinto scores a 10. Cowboys and Aliens - 3; couldn't get through it. In fairness, however, it wasn't a very good copy. To cleanse the palate, watched The English Patient - 8; quite good.

Not a movie, but just recently watched Monty Python: Almost the Truth (The lawyers cut)2009. Six part doco about MP and background to the movies in the last episodes.

Interesting watch if you haven't seen it already.

Haven't been anywhere. I'm just quiet in nature.

Watched Battle: Los Angeles recently. It's like Independence Day on a macro level with a bit of Blackhawk Down mixed in. Mindless war movie flagwaver. I enjoyed it cause I was in the mood to watch some mindless war movie flagwaving.

    Sober & critical rating: 4/10
Most of the way through a bottle of wine rating: 6.5/10
Some people think it don't, but it be.

    Meek's Cutoff - 2010

Settlers traveling through the Oregon desert in 1845 find themselves stranded in harsh conditions.

Maybe my favorite movie I've seen this year. I'd classify it as an anti-western, which is a niche genre that I particularly like.
Sparse, minimalist film-making is not top of my list, but for westerns, it seems to work.
    9/10

    The Green Hornet

Overly long, the lead characters Seth Rogan & some Taiwanese music star look out of place in a film that tries to be a comedy and an action movie and only partially succeeds at both. Christopher Waltz (who played one of my favourite characters ever, the SS bad guy in Inglerious Basterds) comes across a bit boring as the bad guy.

Not really what I expected from this film. Looking forward to the next Dark Knight movie.

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills - 1996

A horrific triple child murder leads to an indictment and trial of three nonconformist boys based on questionable evidence. (Documentary)

It's been years since I've seen this, but in light of today's incredible news that the West Memphis 3 have been released after almost 20 years in prison, I thought this deserves a mention.

One of the most affecting documentaries I've seen. Extremely grim and infuriating. A must see for true-crime aficionados.

    Thanks for recommending.
Whilst looking for a torrent of this I discovered that there's a follow up called "Revelations" which was released in 2000 that you might or might not be aware off.
Looking forward to seeing this, love these kinds of documentaries.

Cheers, I've seen the second documentary. After watching both, the hopelessness and injustice of the situation is a tad overwhelming. Not exactly uplifting film-watching, but yeah, I'm fond of these kind of documentaries too.

I still can't get over that the Memphis 3 were released, considering all the forces that were set against them. Apparently, they had to sign some weird plea bargain to be set free that somehow keeps the guilty verdicts intact.

It's all rather "Truth is stranger than fiction," as you'll see if you watch the films. Especially with regard to one prime suspect (that the police ignored of course), who comes across as one vile, evil mofo.

At any rate, the films are heavily seeded on the 'noid at the moment, so I'm looking forward to re-watching the first one.

Superb film. Nothing like what you would expect from the western genre. A totally new exploration of American pioneer history.

Watched both "Paradise Lost" docos over the weekend, and all I can really say is : Wow, is this the mother of all fuck-ups when it comes to police investigating or what???
Didn't know much at all about this case other than vaguely hearing that people like Eddie Vedder were campaigning for the release of the WM3. After watching these 2 superb docos one has to wonder how many innocent people are locked up in prisons all over the world or are even excecuted for crimes that they didn't commit.
John Mark Byers does make himself look as guilty as hell throughout the movies, shame that there's not a shred of hard evidence against him though.

Here's a link for both movies from Demonoid, quick downloads too.

Burzynski: Cancer Is Serious Business on Vimeo

From a link in another thread. A movie about how a cure for cancer (most cancers, not just one or two) has been buried by the Pharma companies sponsored US Government and its agencies to prevent an individual and not the Pharma companies profiting from the biggest thing in medicine since antibiotics.

Buitiful starring Javier Badem grabbed me from the start when I watched the dvd of it two nights ago.I must admit I had not read about it and did not know it had been nominated as had Badem for the Academy Awards.
Badem an incredible actor (No country for Old men) lived the role from start to finish and even though not knowing of it's status I knew I had just watched something extremely special.
The sub titles added to the authenticity of the film and the story line was believable and incredibly descriptive. Easy to forget the quality of films gone past but this film has to be in the best ten I have ever experienced and enjoyed.
    Highly recommended viewing.

BBC - BBC Four Programmes - Inspector Montalbano, Excursion to Tindari

    Excursion to Tindari

Drama based on the series of books featuring the Sicilian detective, Inspector Montalbano. A young Don Juan is found murdered in front of his apartment building and an elderly couple are reported missing after an excursion to the ancient site of Tindari.
Inspector Montalbano tries to solve these two seemingly unrelated cases amid the daily complications of life at Vigata police station. But when he discovers that the couple and the murdered young man lived in the same building, his investigation stumbles onto Sicily's brutal 'New Mafia' and leads him down a path more twisted and far-reaching than any he has ever been down before."

In Italian with English sub titkles. A cheerfull comedic movie showing the inadequacies of the Italian police.

For some reason despite being a big fan of gangster flicks I had never seen "Donnie Brasco," so I picked up a copy for 80 baht at Mangpong and watched it last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it, although I did have to listen to mia inamorata (no not mia noi) complaining about the bad subtitles. My reply- "Good Thai subtitles, fuhgeddaboudit!" (Of course, "Bad Thai subtitles, fuhgeddaboudit!" would also be an accurate usage of that useful expression.)

I will say that it is more than a bit disconcerting when a movie set in the prime of one's own life looks a lot like a period piece. . .

It's very enjoyable as long as you don't think too much about it, because it makes no sense. One thing I did find kind of annoying was the rundown of history that ignores everything outside the Western experience, for instance when the "Dark Ages" are mentioned. While the period following the collapse of Rome may or may not have been dark in Western Europe, it certainly wasn't "dark" in other places in the world, quite the opposite. I can't go into much more detail without spoiling the plot.

Are you sure your talking about the same movie Rob?

I'd had a few glasses of wine but I don't remember there being anything about history, the dark ages or Rome.

Have you confused this one with the Davinci Code?

Go back to the explanation about human history and free will. Can't go into too much without spoilers. These movies (Matrix, Inception, Source Code) go wrong when they try to go intellectual. The movie has as many plot holes as it does doors, but it is well-made, well-acted and fun- more fun than the "Matrix" series, which takes itself way too seriously.
