"The Marine"
Oh dear.....
Made by 'WWE Films', starring 'John Cena'. I dont think I need to say more.
What was I thinking when I wasted my download bandwidth on this? Oh well, I was pretty wasted while watching it so enjoyed it in a strange, somehow shameful, way.
"Idiocray" with Luke Wilson. Average dude, typical underachiever is chosen to be frozen in an experiment for a year predictably something goes awry he wakes up in 2505 to find the dumb people have bred all teh smart out of people, he get arrested, tested and found to be the smartest man on the planet...
Lame premise but what gets done with it is interesting for reasons I doubt the director or producers intended.
Lightweight movie made me laugh and amazed e with it's fairly accurate send up of life in Thailand. With all the people quoting advertising slogans as ultimate wisdom and the pres stating he's gonna fix things in a week with some preposterous program and so much else; reminds me of life here.
Anyone's been here a while will enjoy it I think.
^
Haven't heard of that one.
Is it new?
I have watched several movies recently, they have all been crap to mediocre.
Will review tham tomorrow.
This one is mediocre but entertaining. It's from 2005 and you can get it here:
Idiocracy 2006 DvDrip AC3 Eng aXXo » Torrentspy.com
thanks.
will get that one.
I liked Idiocracy, the description sounded like crap but they managed to craft a pretty funny movie out of it in the end.
I have been pretty bad about not writing a review of the last movie I saw, so tonight I'm going to break that slump!
I saw Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005) & liked it a lot.
It was a good portrayal of the disconnect between people in this modern age. I agree w/ some of the gadgets that we have @ our disposal has distanced ourselves from people around us, but @ the same time I feel it's made the world smaller, & easier to meet people you wouldn't have dreamed of meeting 20 years ago!
Besides that, it was well written, acted, shot & directed. It falls into more of the art/independent category, which can be bad in some cases, due the tendency of being pretentious at times, but this movie went out there, but kept at least one foot on the ground.
I would give it 3.5/4 stars!
"I'm never gonna work another day in my life
The gods told me to relax
They said I'm gonna be fixed up right"
Monster Magnet
This is a double review, of a movie I watched last night (Flags of Our Fathers (2006)), along with a movie I saw a month ago (Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)). Clint Eastwood pretty much shot both of these movies @ the same time, because of the similar sets & subject matter, the Battle of Iwo Jima.
"Flags of our Fathers" is from the American point of view, & "Letters from Iwo Jima," is from the Japanese perspective.
When I saw "Flags of Our Fathers," I was pleasantly surprised! The reason I say pleasantly surprised is because I saw Letters from Iwo Jima & thought it was a typical American war movie made post 1990 (ie Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line), except it was in Japanese, with English subtitles. It had rich colors, mixed w/ a sepia toned look, with the typical war movie cliché dialogue. Along with the back & forth of the present & the past.
So "Letters from Iwo Jima" gets 2.25/4 stars. I thought the acting was pretty good, along with the battle scenes, editing & special effects! My problem was more with the cookie cutter look & the script.
As for Flags of our Fathers, it had a touch of the above, especially the back & forth between the battles in Iwo Jima, & the battle back @ home. But I think what made Flags better is that it really followed these characters (the men who were holding the flag in the famous photo taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima). You saw the media circus surrounding the picture, along with the controversy with its validity, the use of the picture for propaganda & the horrible treatment of the American Indian Ira Hayes. It also had the same positives as "Letters from Iwo Jima," great special effects, editing, etc..
So I give "Flags of Our Fathers" 3.25/4 stars.

King Kong
Its about an ape.
Borat (2006)
Sacha Baron Cohen
anybody that doesn't find this movie funny is obviously either too stupid to understand it or else agrees with the homophobic anti semetic attitude that Cohen's well practiced character portrays.
At times the movie is difficult to watch as we see Cohen ridiculing redneck American scum time and again.
My favourite scene was definitely his visit to the Rodeo where dressed in ludicrous Stars and stripes shirt he bays the oafs in the crowd with wonderful lines like...
"We, the people of Kazakhstan support your War OF terror" (massive wooping)
"I hope GW Bush drinks the blood of every muslim infidel" (woops and more hollers...the audience lapping it up.
Others that get the 'made to look stupid treatment are a group of racist frat boys and not surprisingly an evangelical church.
This movie is very cleverly done and will hopefully have right minded Americans looking at their culture and thinking hmmmm. I doubt it though, he is probably preaching to the converted.
4.5 out of 5.
Eat my Arse !
Loved the Borat movie, Very clever that man.....................for a jew
FUBAR 9/10 "Give'er!"
FUBAR is a story of two lifelong friends, Terry (David Lawrence) and Dean (Paul Spence), who have grown-up together: Shotgunning their first beers, forming their first garage band, and growing the great Canadian mullet known as "hockey hair". The lives of these Alberta Everymen are brought to the big screen by documentarian Farrel Mitchener (Gordon Skilling) in an exploration of the depths of friendship, the fragility of life, growing up gracefully, and the art and science of drinking beer "like a man".
The movie has been described as a mockumentary, not merely a comedy, with part of its story dealing with dramatic and life changing events in the lives of the main characters.
The movie is notable for introducing several phrases and slang words from the local head-banger and hoser culture of Western Canada into the wider English vocabulary, such as "Give'r".
Free Enterprise 8/10
Free Enterprise is a 1998 comedy/romance movie featuring William Shatner, directed by Robert Meyer Burnett and written by Mark A. Altman and Robert Meyer Burnett. The film deals with the mid-life crises of its two main protagonists, Mark and Robert, fictionalized versions of the film's director and producer/writer played by Eric McCormack (of Will & Grace fame) and Rafer Wiegel. The two friends struggle with adult career and relationship problems, all the while defiantly clinging to the geeky science fiction pop culture of their youth and seeking advice from their greatest hero, William Shatner.
Shatner plays a campy caricature of himself as he works on a one-man musical version of Julius Caesar in hopes of finally being taken seriously as an artist. Hip-hop artist "The Rated R", joined by Shatner, provides the concluding musical number, Julius Caesar, a pastiche of famous lines from the play set to a rap rhythm. The film's score was produced by Scott Spock.
The film is laced with highly esoteric references to past and contemporary science-fiction films and television shows. Most prominent is the original Star Trek, which is treated by the protagonists as a source of inspiration and moral guidance. Free Enterprise explores the dating scene for late gen-x Hollywood singles from a decidedly sardonic perspective.
The film won four awards including the 2000 Saturn Award for Best Home Video Release. A new 2-disc DVD special edition Free Enterprise: Extended "Five Year Mission" Edition was released on March 7 2006.
A sequel, Free Enterprise 2 (2006)[1] is currently in pre-production.
Door to Door 8.5/10
Door to Door was a 2002 TV movie about Bill Porter (played by William H. Macy), a door-to-door salesman afflicted with cerebral palsy. The film was produced for the TNT cable network and won six Emmy Awards. Other actors in the film included Helen Mirren, Kyra Sedgwick, and Kathy Baker.
Porter had been told for many years that he was not employable, but he threw all of his effort into working as a salesman for Watkins. Despite the pain of his medical condition, he would walk eight to ten miles a day to meet his customers. Porter has been able to support himself, and continued to work as a salesman at the age of 69 at the time of the film's showing.

^ I guess I should review The Last King of Scotland (2006)
A GREAT movie about the rise & mental fall of Idi Amin. Whitaker's performance was amazing (as always)! The cinematography was GREAT, the editing was amazing, & the script was out of this world!
What I can't ignore was the supporting cast, especially James McAvoy as the young Scottish doctor who traveled to Uganda for a sense of adventure! His character isn't a historic character, but he was a good vehicle to see the personal side of Amin.
An excellent movie, that I highly suggest. I would give it 4/4 stars!

You just saved me the bother.
An excellent movie.
Forest Whitaker in outstanding form...
Watched 'Idiocrasy' and 'Children of men' last night.
Only one was worth it IMO.
