Weird result from copy and paste

I received an email confirmation for an order, only as a seemingly unformatted email body, no attachments. To store it outside email I used copy and paste for the text into my old Word 2007. Something very weird happened. When pasting I got some note connecting. Then the text appeared in word, but not at all similar to what was in the mail. It was transformed into a perfectly formatted bill.

Copy and paste into a different application can do weird things to formatting. But from unformatted to perfectly formatted? I don't like if my computer does something like this even if the result is good.

    Any ideas what happened?

Your computer is infeted with the 'format' virus.
There is no known cure. Sorry but you will have to throw it out and get a new one.

If I had a new Word, something connected to a cloud, I might suspect that hidden in the email was some redirect command that gets my word to download a formatted version. But my version of word is old.

They C+P'd from Word or another program to their email.

Then when you C+P'd it back into word, the formatting was the same as they originally had.

Sounds like a possible explanation. Thanks.

    Can't green you.

There are loads of fake "orders", "invoices", etc. being spammed around with Word or Excel attachments and malware embedded in them.

Are you certain this isn't one of those?

Yes, it was a legitimate response to an order I had placed, paid for and now already received. No complaints, everything handled smoothly.

Is your mail client set to only display plain text?

What does it look like if you paste it into Notepad?

    HTML or Word?
