    Apps and Privacy

Why do so many apps ask for such intrusive permissions?

Viber app asked for access to my contact list which I did not even notice. I later installed Viber desk-top and in the desktop app magically appeared a list of all my contacts so they have cached the phone numbers and emails of every contact (friends, colleagues, GFs, holiday girls) on their server. Fuck me that is fucked up! I would prefer to add Viber contacts to a separate Viber list as needed.

Then I installed Badoo app. I was chatting with this girl for a while in QLD and she messages me and says what are you doing in Melbourne? Badoo actually tracks you using the mobile app and posts your location live on your profile when you fly anywhere.... WTF!

There needs to be some laws and regulations around these cowboy apps.

That's why they tell you before you install what permissions they require.

You can also download an app to selectively disable them.

Oh, and you can turn location off you know.

Nearly impossible to mandate regulations throughout the cyber-electronic world.
It has completely captured us - because we allow them to do so.

The best way to solve such issues is to not participate.

I always assume that if they create it and give it to you for free, they make money other ways, notably by taking everything you have on your device and selling it to the highest bidder.

Be careful with that Badoo, That fukkin thing sent my profile pic,(luckily i never had my cock out) along with an invite to everyone in my email. I had my brother call me asking why im sending pics to his wife. I deleted that sharpish and his wifes email addy, the poisonous bitch

A friend showed me an app the other day called We Chat that you should check out Loops, you can see who lives in your condo or who is in close proximity to you, chat to them and even shake your device and if someone shakes back, you're in.

Sounds interesting Dill, although I think maintaining a 'not shitting on your own doorstep' policy is also prudent!

that'ts the beauty about it, it's location based. You can go and shit all over whoever you want to's doorstep. Maybe an ex's neighbour

Wechat is a Chinese company. They blocked whatsapp so everyone has to use Wechat.
    It is good though.

I'll bump on this thread as its the most pertinent.

A friend wanted me to free up some space on their android phone - not my area, but able to give it a go. Mainly just downloading her photos from the phone to her computer and then deleting.

My observations - the photos were all over the farking place - multiple, multiple copies everywhere. Simply deleting a photo from the gallery does NOT delete the photo from the phone - there may be as many as three or four other copies of it elsewhere, all different folders, all different file extensions.

This applied to every image app - whether taken with the camera, recieved through line or whattsapp.

Point is, if you send or receive "candid" photos - burn the damn phone when its no longer used. Easy to see why so many people get caught out when deleting photos then sending it to the repair shop or selling it on.

A little tip for you Nid. To hide your "candid" photos from appearing in your gallery... . Place a full stop in front of the photo's file name. If you wanna see them later when the wife's not around look into your file manager and click show hidden files.

Yeah, thats ok - more just pointing out that anyone wanting to "clean" a phone needs to do much, much more than simply delete the gallery photo!

Free idea for any developers out there - an "image scrubber" app for android phones....(or if anyone knows one, let me know!)

It's a lot easier mate, if you plug your phone into your PC and see what needs deleting on the big screen and then mass delete

Thats what I did. Was just horrified how many obscure folder held the images. Like I said - 3 or 4 copies of the same image in different folders with different file extensions.

a file called .nomedia in the root dir of an image/media directory will stop ( those that are playing correctly ) the galleries , media players etc from scanning and adding to their list of info

I had a look at that Tinder last night. If I had a pet rabbit I'd fear for its life.
