Thread: Do they eat Rabbits in Thailand?

I think this is the right place to post this:

I work in Bangkok and the wife slaves away at a life of luxury in Phimai,
She has two dogs, and two cats and a lot of fish.

Now she tells me she has 3 rabbits
She tells me about the hutch she has built for them and how cute they are and I tell her about rabbit stew and rabbit pie.
She thinks I’m kidding about that but I’m starting to consider………………

I will retire in about two and a half years and have been wondering what the fcuk I will do with myself when that time comes.

I asked our finance manager, (Khun Nunthana, lovely lady), if breeding rabbits, (not a hard job, they breed like, ……..err,… .rabbits), and then selling rabbit pies, with a cute little bunny rabbit picture on the packaging, would go down well in Thailand.
She gave me a horrified look and told me I was a monster.

Is she an exception, or would Thai’s like a bit of rabbit pie/stew?

Does domestic rabbit taste the same as wild ones ?

I've heard a lot of men in Thailand shoot rabbits. Not sure if they eat them though, as they might have a bit of a pissy taste.

^ My family in law is living in Isarn, they will eat everything that used to have a heart beat.

Incidentally, it is quite common for thai guys to shoot rabbits.
In fact they do so on a daily basis: ยิงกระต่าย

I have never seen a wild rabbit in Thailand and I have never seen Thai's eat them or seen rabbit on a menu.

How would wild rabbits taste compared to reared rabbits?
What does pissy taste like? Not being funny, just want to know what you mean.

Imagine the damage rabbits would do to the rice if they bred out of control like in Britain years back.

Ok, didn't think of that, but rice is grown in water yes? Can rabbits swim, and like you said "do rabbits eat rice" ?

I would have thought that if there are bunnys in Thailand, which there are, then some would have escaped into the wild by now and bread like rabbits, so to speak, and if they liked rice then there would be a big rice / rabbit problem by now.

Just saying like............

I asked about breeding rabbits once and was told that I would be over run with snakes.
Might be true

A friend has some goats but wont let me have one slaughtered. A bit selfish if you ask me.

Hang on,
If bunnies can swin and if they eat rice, and if there are wild bunnies in Thailand then why is there not a big rabbit / rice problem here?
I have heard that they breed "like rabbits" and become a real pest if not controlled ,so why has that not happened here?

Wife says they did raise rabbits, and while they didn't eat them they did sell them to people who very probably did.

Ok, got it.

Makes you laugh at some Thais indignation at the thought of eating rabbits when you go to the local market and see large rats skinned and gutted for sale.
Of course when you turn your nose up they say"but they are rice rats". Sure they are, they are labelled that way when caught and these rats dont go through gorging on rubbish ha ha.
Rabbits in Oz, before Chicken became the preference and affordable were on the home menu daily,roast rabbit, fried rabbit, boiled rabbit. I recall my sister and I arguing over who would get the kidneys.
These days I could not be coerced into eating rabbit though.
Showing my age, but the sound of the guy on the horse and cart calling out Rabbits for sale as he drove through our suburban street still rings clear to me.

I love rabbit stew and tried to introduce my Issan eat anything once wife to it and she point blank refused .

Come to think of it, I've never seen a rabbit in Thailand either.

^Maybe they're viewed mainly as pets, so they see it as equivalent to eating the family cat or something?

Kateye is bunny in Thai .

The wife just told me there were rabbits in the bush when she was a young girl,said her old man used to trap or shoot them to eat.
