Did it come from Dodgy Dave's Double Dickin' Fish Farm Enterprise?
Did it come from Dodgy Dave's Double Dickin' Fish Farm Enterprise?
A light lunch at the Phuket Yacht Club. Smooth chicken pate, with lightly toasted ciabatta, and a decent side salad.
Lulu ... made me smile.
But oh no, not from our Farm.
... and the reason I know that it didn't is ... that fish is way undersized for what we produce.
At best, SP's Pla Nin is 4-5 months old. the Fish Brokers love that size, but it's uneconomical to produce and harvest fish that small.
While I have the Floor, I couldn't be to respond to bsnub's reply above however ...
The PlaNin he would usually encounter is probably farmed in the USA ... Arizona University
Inside Thailand, antibiotics are rarely/never used ... there isn't any profit margin to pay for them.
They don't eat shit*, and they don't taste particularly 'fishy', thus vastly suitable for a number of dishes where
the fish supplies the protein and the sauces provide the flavour.
The articles he referenced are deceptive at best and wrong in many issues.
Take this image from his e drug research link ... https://edrugsearch.com/never-eat-tilapia/
^ Disgusting cancerous fish it is! Just look at it ... all those cancerous tumors ready to infect you!
So, that's the photo used and the headline is ... 3.) Tilapia Can Increase the Risk of Cancer
Because tilapia are often farmed, they may have up to 10 times more carcinogens than other types of fish.
This is directly linked to what the farmers feed tilapia.
Dioxin is one of the dangerous compounds found in tilapia.
It takes the body several years to flush out this toxin.
This means that dioxin has a long time to do damage to your body.
So, the facts are ... that image, if read quickly would seem that the fish had some sickly disease,
some cancer transferable to humans.
In reality, Tilapia, PlaNin are Mouthbrooding, also known as oral incubation and buccal incubation, is the care
given by some groups of animals to their offspring by holding them in the mouth of the parent for extended periods of time.
So, all you are seeing are the fish eggs which are held in it's mouth to protect them.
Is that mentioned?
NO ... just the line that "tilapia are often farmed, they may have up to 10 times more carcinogens than other types of fish".
Also, in fish farming, typicially we only use a mono sex culture ... yep, they are all males.
To have mixed sex fish stock is inefficient with the feed conversion ratio ... no sence in producing off-spring.
Nine months from pond to plate, give or take a fortnight is about right from fingerling to harvest.
There are so many other examples I could use for the quoted articles, but the fish analysis would become boring and a wall of text.
Not having a go at bsnub, he used articles which, at face value supported his ideas but sadly, they arn't factually based.
I will say however, there is a common theme that Tilapia have and excess of omega-6 fatty acids, which isn't
the current 'ideal' fatty acid. Give it a month and next it will be the cure for the common cold ... who knows
Random thought time...
I hate duck and I've got no idea why.
Just something about even the thought of eating it that puts me off.
OK random thought done. As you were.
Suit yourself but I do not under any circumstances eat farm raised fish. If I can not find wild caught I just won't eat it. There is no way you can tell me with a straight face that you know what they are being fed, if they are being pumped full of growth hormones or antibiotics. In the USA genetic modification is also a concern. No sir no thanks. I can get several different species of locally/regionally caught fish at my local market.
Fair enough, as a consumer, you have the perfect right and choice (if the wallet allows) to do so.
I would point out this salient fact though.
From a fairly reliable source ... seafood health facts
The U.S. Seafood SupplyImported Seafood Supply - Over 90% of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported from other
countries around the world.
This number continues to rise in order to meet consumer demand.
Huh? ... I live and breath on a Fish and Prawn/Shrimp Farm in Thailand !
I KNOW EXACTLY what they are fed, and when.
I've been to the Prawn hatcheries and to both the Fish wholesale markets and when the buyer comes to the Farm.
I've been there during the Fish Food delivery.
I can discuss the nadir point on the O2 saturation point on a daily basis.
The stratification of a pond.
The symbiotic relationship and cycle between PlaNin and Prawns.
This is a Thailand experience, what happens in the USA, I have no idea.
AGREED. Again, about the USA Market, I have no idea, but GM products are a definite no-no for me.
The fingerlings at the Thai Fish Farm are gender selected, not GM modified.
Again, consumer choice. But I revert to my fact above ... Over 90% of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported from other
countries around the world.
Made pickled cucumbers....I'd have taken pictures but I left my phone upstairs...
Well than you are in a exceptional position as most people have never stepped on a fish farm and have no way of knowing if the farmer is honest like you.
The figure I get is around 80& and I would guess that would be mostly shrimp and tuna. I can only speak for myself and not most other Americans. I live in the NW close to the Puget Sound. Most of the Alaskan fish fleet is based just a short bike ride from my home. My family worked in the industry.
I can get cod, rock fish, clams, mussels, oysters, dungeness crab, halibut and salmon year round. Some of it is expensive like the halibut but most is pretty affordable.
I usually can get fresh local rock fish for $4.99-6.99 a pound. When in season I can often get Dungeness crab (best in the world imho) for 5.99 a pound. Cod goes from 5-7 a pound. Local Penn cove mussels for 4.99 a pound etc.
Now if I am not lazy I can grab my fishing pole and crab pot and not pay a dime.
A Non-Russian dish
^^ Great Stuff bsnub ...
The Master Butcher?
There were 2 minute pieces of beef in there
Rock Fish is also known as Rock Salmon in some parts. (Snakes may well be able to confirm)
Egg sandwich on funny coloured bread
My pickles.....
That sandwich was not enough for my dinner
