Not by my Mum who went through the war and rationing etc but i get where you are coming from. Cheap cuts were a staple for me growing up and imho are the tastiest, i'll add oxtail, tongue and cheek and i just know you'd have loved my mums brawn or headcheese as you yanks like to call it.

Actually and as usual you missed the point. We ate well, my mum cooking Indian, Italian and Chinese dishes in the 50/60 onwards well ahead of most and she was accomplished in cooking posh nosh for diner parties as demanded by her husband being a senior manager but she chose to use cheap cuts for family cooking as they were our favourites. I try emulate her cooking but somehow its never the same.

I would have to say that my main course tonight wasn't up to par... partly due to my desire to purge the house of alcohol.

But the pudding hit the mark. A batch of pretty-well perfect cup cakes the daughter and I made up using a new recipe gave an opportunity to open up my tin of Ambrosia Chocolate Custard.

Mr Kipling himself would have been proud of this.

Well I should also be open in that we grew up what most called poor. My Mom would cook meatloaf 2 times a week and that would be dinner the next night. I used to smother it in Ketchup to eat it. We usually always had canned green beans or peas. To stretch the ground hamburger she added ground kidney, liver, stomach, tongue or whatever was cheap and available at the butcher. Now to even smell or see meatloaf makes me cringe. Seeing Liver makes me damn near puke. It's one of those things that you just leave behind.

Snubs and Yankeedoodle are correct for once.

Liver, kidneys and hearts... Hari Krishna and all that's holy, I'd rather suck on Mendo's big toe.

Well i can see why it might for you but the food my mum turned out was excellent, if i'm honest the only thing i didn't care for was stuffed marrow because i couldn't see the point of the marrow part.

I agree, with the exception of haggis and paté.

We had to eat meatloaf often enough when I was a kid. Loved the stuff then. Hate it now.

Liver was also on the menu which I hated it then. Love it now.

Ate my share of canned green beans and peas, too. F’n rutabagas. Barf.

The other problem was my mother was an awful cook. Boiled every vegetable until it was gray. I was an adult before I realized vegetables could be tasty.

^ Seems to be a common theme misskit... my mum cooked veg until it was soggy and flaccid, same for everyone else I know.

This fad of crunchy, tasty veg is definitely a new one.

Mine had enough of my endless whinging and whining so by age 9 dinner was usually a San Marco pizza thrown in the oven that I had to take out myself.

It was a win-win for all concerned.

Mum: Just waiting for the carrots to soften.

meatloaf four times a week? Mother of Mary!

Offal cooked well tastes good, offal ground into mince sounds disgusting

We ate it regularly too, usually with mashed potatoes and gravy and wait for it...

    ...canned green beans.

Mine was not much better. She would cook roasts and steak to the consistency of shoe leather, and most of the time the veg came out of a can. But she could make a nice holiday dinner because she learned that from my great-grandmother.

When I was a teenager, I started to cook my own steak out on the grill, so I could have it less well done, but I have to say it wasn't until I got older that I realized she wasn't a good cook. I never had a problem with the meals she made as a kid.

My mother was a wonderful cook and still is today. She taught all of us kids to eat right (eat to survive and don’t survive to eat). None of us kids (even today) have ever had a weight problem. One problem with her………you ate everything on your plate or you don’t leave the table. Fell asleep more than a few times at the table. Fvck cauliflower and asparagus.

Some parts of Linner (lunch/dinner), yesterday……….

    Hers (seafood pasta)……

    Mine (escargot)……….

Yes sometimes. Same meatloaf with different veggies. My Mom would also throw in Tuna Casserole, beef stroganoff and being Sicilian was a lot of Pasta dishes. Again all to stretch a meal.

I never ate liver and won't. When my mom made it, I ate the vegetable dishes or the salad. The liver is the filter for all the crap and pollutants an animal eats. Don't care how you cook it. To me it would be like eating an oil filter off a car.

^^^ While that does look well presented, and quite appetizing, if not knowing what's in it....
