    Thai dancing Shrimps/How to Make?

Well I saw this video of someone eating Thai Dancing Shrimps and it is quite obvious that they are still alive, so I decided to google it, now every site I found said to Barbeque the shrimps first, Looking at the video I don't think these even got to see the BBQ, so far I have worked out that they pull the shell and legs off of the live shrimps, and then they chuck lime juice and chili all over them to make them dance, seems a bit cruel to me.

The upstanding citizens of Chicago are up in arms over an upcoming foie gras ban because of the inhumane way ducks and geese must be force fed during the last weeks of life to make the livers larger.

"Oh, but they run around in the open during the first few weeks of life," defended Jack Ass, the head of the American Foie Gras Association.

There is nothing to remove normally, as the dancing shrimps are normally at the baby stage, may be 10 mm long, all is eaten ...

I did not tried it ! but it was available home this week end, first time i saw this...

The ones in the movie look like adults, or is it babys from Godzilla shrimps?

I ate it once (many years) at Soi Cowboy on the street. They had a little aquarium and the girl was fishing it out with a little net.
    The taste was o.k.

What other foods do we eat alive?

    Oysters!

I have seen my wife eating it (she seem to have the same opinion about this dish as GoW) and I can tell you, the baby shrimps are definitely still alive.

    sound good

I have only had the Chinese "drunken prawns". They puit the prawns in wine, which makes them jump about a lot until they get pissed

then they throw them in the wok

    a better way to go

don't think they are babies. just a smaller species.
up here in chiang rai, at pattaya noi, it is the dish.
first time i ate them didn't know what i'd orderd. kung ten, wtf., i'll give it a go. thought the ceramic bowl with it's lid had something boiling inside. took the lid off and the little fuckers were jumping everywhere. i was stamping on them and brushing them off my lap. the locals had a good laugh.
now, once a month without fail. as my old man used to say, puts lead in yer pencil

A Thai acquaintance explained that it isn't cruel, because the lime juice, chillis, fish sauce and garlic the little buggers are doused in puts them to sleep. And we all know that being eaten alive in your sleep doesn't hurt at all.

BTW, yes I've tried them, and no, I didn't like them much. I prefer my shrimps in a light batter and fried until crispy.

I had it once. Didn't find it special enough that I had to eat live shrimp. If you like that 'fresh' taste, I think a nice cheviche is much better. Meatier shrimp and easier to eat. One of these days I'll post an AWEsome cheviche recipe.

Then they sure as hell must be sleep walking, because they were jumping everywhere when I had them. Nightmare if their eyes are open!!

I think you're supposed to wait until they stop moving before you eat them. That's what my out-laws told me, anyway.

One of my favourites as well, although shrimps are less fun to eat when they don't try to fight back or escape.

The drunken prawns I have had in China and Taiwan were done a bit differently.

    They get a big bowl.
Heat up some smooth pebbles in a wok
Put the hot pebbles in the bowl
    Pour in the wine-Usually sake
Put the live prawns in and put the lid on the bowl
Leave it for a minute or two
    Drain off the warm/hot sake
Eat the prawns washed down with the sake
    Really nice !
