    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen

Post up any ideas for super-easy zero-effort healthy food.

A large 150g bag of leafy baby greens
A large 425g tin of tuna (275g of tuna when drained)
    Salad dressing

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230927_222931-jpg

I actually cheated and broke the bloke rules here since I discovered that I did not have any salad dressing so I had to.... make my own from scratch.... Aaaaagh!

    Olive oil
    Cider vinegar
    Garlic (from a jar!)
    Pepper

It was a top feed with leftovers and 10/10 for health

Leafy greens are the gold standard
Tuna is 25% protein plus omega oils
    Olive oil dressing is good

I hear garlic is good for your circulation, so there’s another win.

Hmm I'd add Dijon to the dressing and sliced cherry Tom's.

This is a broad church blokes' thread MM with no y-chromosome credentials required. Bloke in this context refers to anyone who is averse to spending more than the absolute minimum time in the kitchen. So you could be an honorary bloke...

Yes I did try adding some mayo to make it a creamy dressing but it is hard to get the mayo to mix well with the oil and vinegar although it eventually did

Another leafy feed this time with 1Kg of pulled chicken breast courtesy of Senorita's food drop

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230928_210706-jpg

Mix up a dressing of mayo and pesto. I did not realise how unhealthy mayo is until after I had made it - 80% fat - I thought it would have more protein from the eggs but only 1%

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230928_210957-jpg

    Mix it up

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230928_211031-jpg

Add the chicken and mix. It was good but then I thought maybe I can add curry powder since I remeber some awesome chicken curry salads.

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230928_211919-jpg

Chuck in the leaves and toss

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230928_213010-jpg

    and serve

When was the last time you ate a salad that wasn’t overloaded with carbs and dressing?

That's not cheating, I mostly use just balsamic vinegar, and cut out the oil. Oil has a ton of useless calories that I don't need. It is so hard to cut out oil though as it is in so many foods, even store bought hummus. I was making my own hummus with no oil for awhile.
The salad looks good, Looper! I'll post some of my health creations soon.

Because, next you'll be telling us about quorn, falafel, bean curd and plant based pork belly and that is exactly why this is emphasised as the blokes healthy kitchen thread

^^Nothing wrong with bean curd (tofu), and falafel. I don't like fake meat either. Only thing I will eat is a tofu burger of sorts. Beans are good for you though.

Made a dinner I eat quite often.

    Cut up some sweet potato

Put it in my air fryer (non stick) with a bit of salt and garlic

Get my salad stuff ready to make a salad.

Voila, nice and healthy! I only eat half of the potatoes I make, and keep the rest for lunch tomorrow. I also add in a bit of sauerkraut for good gut bacteria. Also added a tablespoon of hummus to dip my potatoes into.

A massive serving of it, but still plenty of potatoes left for lunch.

Broccoli is tonights theme (and the rest of the week being a big batch). It is a top ranking veggie and healthy enough to warrant cheese sauce which itself is not too bad at 13% protein + 6% fat + 6% carb

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230929_212145-jpg

This was a big 2.5 litre batch. Add salt pepper rosemary and thyme

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230929_213902-jpg

I made the extra 0.5 litre so I could make and old student favourite: Mushroom Mush. It is great way to eat mushrooms since it really distils out all the earthy mushroom aroma. I will mix dollops of this with chicken left over from the leafy salad.

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230929_214307-jpg

Cheese into the remaining 2 litres

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230929_215305-jpg

These big batches can take a long time for the milk to heat up so warm the milk up in the microwave or another pan while you are doing other prep

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230929_220827-jpg

    And viola

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20230929_220912-jpg

It is good that healthy food can be yummy. Broccoli cheese sauce would be a dessert island food that I could eat for the rest of my life.

I am reading this book which advises to ramp up your protein once you get past 50 for healthspan maximisation

I got a bag of whey protein (extracted from cheese byproduct - dairy protein) and a bag of pea protein (extracted from.... peas! - vegetable protein)

The pea protein has a slightly earthy pea-ish taste - 80% protein. The whey protein has a slightly creamy taste - 70% protein.

The 500g pea protein bag was smaller than the 500g whey protein bag making the pea protein more dense.

I tried adding a couple of spoons of pea protein to my Tom Yum.

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20231002_230454-jpg

It turned it from its usual clearish dark brown colour to a kind of creamy opaque orange, and took the edge off the chilli burn (points deducted for that). It also made it quite a bit more filling than usual.

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20231002_230859-jpg

I will need to further experiment on ways of sneaking more of this protein supplement into my diet.

For healthier cheese sauce try this, lower fat, no oil , vegan style.

Nice, I like pea protein. I use Vega Sports protein powder.. for shakes made with pea protein (if interested).

Might be the go, although I am more of a winter porridge-partaker.

Yes, making drinks is probably simpler than trying to adulterate your actual meal.

Pimp your cheese sauce with some protein whey...

    The Blokes' Healthy Kitchen-20231003_210429-jpg

It mixes well with cheeses sauce adding thickness so you need to add some milk too.
